My assumption is it will be a problem with the plastic collars used in the 24-70 mk1. I had problems with mine, although it was a different issue than yours. I sent it in and they replaced the collars. Here is an article that explains what needs to be replaced.

The nice part is even though my lens was over a year old and out of warranty Canon still fixed it free of charge. :-) I hope this is the only issue as it is simple and should not cost much if they need to replace them. Or if you are braver and have more talent than me, you could try to fix it yourself.

Lens should be back from canon tomorrow! Fixed under warranty.
Keeping fingers crossed that its perfect now and stays that way forbmany many years!
will let you all know once I get it back
