Shutter button works fine, aperture etc all buttons work fine. But the dial is not working at all when the grip is attached on either body or grip. Any solutions on how to fix?

Hi Zero - sorry to hear about your problems. Is this a new or used grip, and is it the genuine Canon grip or third party aftermarket?

New Genuine Canon grip (off a classified). Seller is unwilling to give me a refund. All of the other buttons work fine, aperture etc but it's the main dial that does not work. So frustrating...

Also I wanted to point out that my dial DOES work when the grip is not attached.

That's too bad he won't deal with you - is that the reason he sold it? I assume that he represented it as fully functional if he sold it as new, so it's sounding like he misrepresented it.

I honestly don't know. He apparently has his own web business so I took his word for it be fully functional.

And yes he did claim it was new.

If it is new then perhaps you can get some (no cost) warranty service directly from Canon? It's worth a shot; call their customer service as it still may be in the warranty period.

It's exceedingly difficult to effectively suggest recourse under law in different countries but, as groundwork:

  • Did the vendor sell this as part of his normal web business (ie. did you buy from "Fred Smith Cameras") or was it a private sale (ie from "Fred Smith private individual")?
  • Has it ever worked or has it been faulty since you received it?
  • How long have you had the grip?
No doubt there are robust Sales Protection measures in place in Canada (particularly if it was bought 'New' from someone whose business is selling photo gear) but I doubt that they would truly be worth pursuing on cost grounds for a CAN$150 grip. However, the suggestion that you may go down that route could be sufficient to tip matters in your favour. I certainly wouldn't go straight to Canon for a warranty repair - that would suggest your acceptance of liability. At least allow the vendor the chance to rectify the situation - gives you better legal standing than leaping off and doing something yourself.

How do you know its a "New Genuine Canon grip"? If it were a genuine Canon grip then he would have no problem for you to return it and get a new one. I'm thinking its a Canon fake and he is trying to sell them off as real.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

What is the sellers ebay name and a link to the grip in question?

OK - so that makes two of us who are more than slightly suspicious.

If it was a "New Genuine Canon grip" there should have been a Canon warranty with it so that you could get warranty service. Sounds like you got burned looking for that "good deal"

If the grip was purchased on eBay then it would qualify for the eBay Buyer Protection. Open a case and your money will be refunded.

that sucks...
I'm assuming this was a face to face meeting, and I'm assuming that you had the chance to test it during this face to face meeting, and did not... that issue would have been detected on the most basics of tests... if you're going to meet someone face to face, a basic test is recommended!

seeing that it is new, hopefully Canon will be able to get this serviced for you!

I'm assuming you have removed the grip, checked the contacts in both the camera and grip and re-attached?

Have you got the grip tightened up very tightly, you might want to back it off a bit, which might improve the connection.
