2:1 400mm f/4 DO Macro? YES PLEASE! :D

1:1 600mm or 800mm? YES!

Shame they'll be REALLY expensive almost guaranteed.. But that said, I'd really be interested in a 400mm f/4 DO Macro, 400mm can be a very useful focal length for flowers and such and having one that actually does macro would be unique...

Lets see. Current 400/4 DO, ~$5.8k.

Add macro function at 2:1 (assuming I'm reading it correctly), ~$2k
"New", ~$5k

We have a 400/4 DO with 2:1 macro, in about never, at ~$12800 :)

Sounds about right with the current pricing scheme. I thought Canon would give up on the DO lenses, but who knows.

I would have thought Canon knew the issues of their DO tech by now. Maybe it is just covering base by patenting but I would be very interested in a supertelephoto non-DO macro.

Diffractive Optics, its a special lens element Canon uses..

..I tried to find an article you dont need a physics degree to understand and failed... So in practical terms what it does is allow Canon to make smaller lighter lenses with less elements in them with as good or better IQ than a lens using refractive (normal) optics

thanks, and why is it that people say the DO system failed? sorry again for ignorance.

Price and donut bokeh I believe. Though I really don't see much of a problem in the bokeh from the 400 DO which, if it were reasonably priced (the main problem), I would love to have.

Its price and the fact the performance was only so-so... the 70-300 DO for instance was a very good little lens, but cost over a grand and wasnt that much better than the cheaper 70-300 in some ways...

Also flare was a big problem with them
