I'm leaning towards the 50L, I also share a portrait hobby and I'm wondering if the 85L would be better for both. What's your stand off distance with the 50L for your shots? 16-35L will be my walk around lens and I also have a 70-200L which would prob be my preferred portrait work horse. Patrick
