The camera has been out for around two years. The only time I've heard of the rear dial not working was when moisture got in it via rain, or in one instance sweat! Other than that this is a very popular and reliable model. The only thing that would concern me is if Amazon ships repacks. You know, items that have been returned by one customer and than repacked and shipped out to another with minimal checking. That could account for the defective dial. I've never heard of one having that problem straight out of the box but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

I'm glad you've never heard of it because I've ordered a replacement. This one's going back - I hope no one else get's stuck with it:(

To be clear, are you half pressing the shutter, then moving the dial right after that? It locks so you dont accidentally move it unless you depress the shutter half way.

It won't even function to change menu options. I did, however, try after half pressing the shutter without any luck.

I was definitely puzzled, but have accepted that I just got a dud or a camera that was previously used/returned? Amazon.com - I don't really know their policy with regard to selling returns. It didn't appear to be in used condition.

Does the rear dial not work for moving around in the menus either? That function can't be locked out, so if it doesn't, there's a fault of some sort.

Yes, it doesn't function for menu selection either. this is why I've finally accepted that it's not user error, it's just a bad dial.

It will be on its way back to Amazom.com tomorrow

I hope you have better luck with the next copy. I would write the serial number down to make sure they done't just send the same camera back to you. I doubt that will be the case, but I guess I'm not a trusting sort.

Help!

Brand new 60D, and can't change aperature when shooting in Manual mode.

Dial is set to M. The main dial works fine to change shutter speed but using the unlock and quick control dial does nothing for aperature...

The word is aperture...A-P-E-R-T-U-R-E...aperture

The same thing occurred with my 60D when shooting some sport event, I used both the M and AV mode, luckily the stuck aperture was at the end of the event, if It was at the start, it would be a very disappointing moment. My 60d is 2 years old, and this is the first time the camera acted up. I think maybe it's a bit of sweat going through the dial. I tried changing the aperture via the Q button and it work except using the top dial. I have a third party battery grip on it, I tried messing with the battery grip dial, then all of sudden, the main top dial work again. That was last November ago, till this date, the cam still work like a charm. I don't think the 60d's have weather resistant, or does it?

I had this same problem one day shooting, I have a Canon grip on my 60D, all I did was turned the camera off and on again and everything was working.

Were you using a 3rd party grip?

Chill out Blue. I find it doesn't do to be too arperature retentive on here.

Oh, and Harpy Christlemas.

Adn a hAPPY Knew Yeer to you :) Seriously though, I'll presume his correction was intended to be helpful and educational, rather than anal retentive.

Cheers Mark. I'm sure he did mean it...

Seriously though, you'll find that Brits and Ozzies have a mutual sarcasm-tinged relationship that we all enjoy with a passion and wouldn't change for anything.

Also, it's mid-summer in Oz and mid-winter here so whereas Phil will be down the beach barbeying his Crizzy Dinner whilst necking a few tinnies, I'm in Northern England in the dank dismal moist dull eight hours of (nothing like) daylight we get here suffering from SADS and drowning my depression with red wine.

Under the circumstances, I'm sure he doesn't mind a bit of piss-taking...

Genuinely though, I hope you all have a great Christmas and a very prosperous 2013.
