Bufflehead's have been one of my favorite ducks and a must find for me since I learned of their existence. This little guy was a lifer for me! When I first noticed him, it was quite overcast and I was thinking I may be able to get a few to prove I saw one, but none showing the great iridescence they are known for. As I was leaving, the wind changed directions and sun came out! This little guy stayed quite a ways from the shore, and kept taking naps, but I managed to get a few while the conditions were right. All images were taken with a 7D, 500 f/4 with 1.4x extender, and handheld from bank.

Hope you all had a great Christmas

-Jason

Nice shots, Jason; I don't get to see as many of these fellows as I'd like. It always apprears their heads have been dipped in gasoline.

These are beautiful! I have yet to get close enough to these for a decent shot. Well done!

Thanks! These birds are very unique. Its unfortunate I live to far south to see many of them as it looks like they are northern ducks. They make our ducks look boring minus the Wood Ducks :)

They are very tough especially with the sun coming and going between clouds. Thank you

This guy is skittish for sure. Usually if you approach him at all, he swims out of range even with a 500 and 1.4 converter.

Thanks, they are much smaller ducks than I expected. They are the smallest diving duck. Hope you have a great New Year also!
