Ah, but he says it was MY fault for not closing the bag --- we agreed to not discuss it. It would be one of those no win discussions. :D

imports, what do you see as potential problems?

Brave man, I tend not to argue with a woman when she has a sharp object :D

I'd just keep an eye out for lose elements, changes in the focus and zoom mechanisms, or any other abnormalites that were not there befor. But like others have said, most L lenses are made to take a beating and the 70-200's are some of the best built lenses around.

To make a blanket statement "I am sure it's fine" is nonsense. You have no way of knowing "for sure", just based on what we know happened.

The only way to really know if it's fine is to have a qualified service tech check it out.

Are "L" lenses tough ? Well....yes, probably more so than lesser lenses. But.....my 24-70 has been back to Canon service twice due to issues from it tumbling to the hard surface of a concrete driveway. From about two feet up. It really can depend on how the whole assembly actually impacted the floor.

As some others have said, if it's a mission critical piece of equipment, then it really should be checked out correctly by a service tech.

Well of course I'm not 100% sure its fine. however through my experience dropping the same lens and the videos i've seen on the internet i'm "sure" its fine based on the statement that it seems to be working fine. Of course anything could happen not going to deny that.

I agree with shiftonephoto here, george is also comparing a 24-70 to the 70-200. By nature the 24-70 has its issues and that's been very well documented to say the least. As for the OP, thousands of things could've happened and maybe none at all. If you suspect there is an issue, Canon can and will look it over for a fee. And I agree that was a no win argument, good for you to keep it civil.

Just to ease my mind, I may send it to canon to look over as I do have insurance on my photo equipment --- we will see. We are in the middle of moving, so it may have to wait.

Yes, I have finally reached an age where I realize that some arguments are just better left alone. It is better to wander off and grumble alone about who was at fault. :D

It may be a good idea to send it to Canon...have you shaken it a bit in a quiet room to see if you can hear any sounds that may not be normal?

A buddy of mine (he treated his equipment like crap...ugh...) put his 70-200L 2.8 on the roof of his car then drove away...the thing hit the pavement hard enough to mess up the focus ring...so he duct taped it and continued to use the lens for daily work (we worked at a newspaper at the time) until he sold the lens a year or so later.

I dropped my 70-200 four feet onto the floor the first day I got it. Luckily I had the hood reversed on it so I think that saved the lens from taking a lot of the force cause the lens is 100% fine just the lens hood has a small crack on it.
