Can you live with just 1 prime lens?

I guess I could, my 85mm. I rarely use my 100L macro. When I go walk around I carry my 16-35, 24-70 & 70-200. But when I shoot portraits I use my 85mm.

no I couldn't I'd need at least one zoom, and I have no primes at this point but I will be getting 2 primes relatively soon. Sigma 50mm f1.4 and Canon 135mm soft focus

One would be super tough. I could easily get by with just two, though - a 35 and 85.

Yep and I am not just getting by but rock'n with my personal work. I went to the Fla Keys with a good buds Leica M9 and a 35 summilux FLE. Thats it. He let me barrow it and I never needed anything else. THe MM had not come in yet. Never missed not having other lenses. I now have the MM and have been doing all of my personal work with just the MM and 35. Getting ready for a one man show in April and possibly another show late in 13 early 14 of the new work.

I must have misunderstood the question because I thought you meant one prime as your one and only lens versus a zoom lens. I'm a prime whore and love lots of primes and will always have more primes than zooms.

Honestly, yes I could. Leave me with a 5D and a 50mm f/1.4, and I'll be happy.

Im NO LONGER thinking about trading my 24-105 for the sigma 35mm (interested in portrait work)

Right now I'm at an indoor auto race where there are another dozen photographers. One prime lens has been spotted, a Canon 300mm f/2.8. The most popular lens at this event is a 70-200mm f/2.8, either Canon or Sigma. Last week I worked several high school basketball games. I was the only one of several photographers who had a prime, a Canon 50mm f/1.8 that I used for a few minutes as a test. The other lenses in use were again a 70-200mm f/2.8, either Canon or Sigma. So from those real-life examples, it looks as if there's no huge feeling among photographers at real events that prime lens are vitally needed.

Yes. 35L it is.

No, but a zoom, yes. If one prime, I would go with a 35 on a system like the Sony rx1

If I had to than FF+35mm or my 1D3+28/1.8 would be enough. If I could than 35+85 EFLs would be fine no matter body...
