so im bored today and ithink im going to try to MA my lenses to my 5d2.

seems simple enough, i just have one question. will the camera MA each lens separately and hold the settings so it automatically adjusts to the proper amount when i put that lens on, i.e. is it a global setting or lens specific?

Yeah, it stores it in memory based on each lens serial number.

What tool/method are you going to use to MA them? I was quite happy using my friend's LensAlign tool.

i found alink (external link) here and wasn't impressed. i used the target on an lcd screen, the problem was i wasn't getting consistent AF at the 8 min working distance for my 50mm.

i may try another method. do you have a link to a better method?

Aaaaaaaaaaaactually...you have a choice...you could MA either lens specific or use the same value for ALL lenses.

Of course, the latter makes no sense, since no two lenses are the same...so don't use that option haha.

Yeah as above you have that option but keep it to specific len.

Also having the 5DmkII you can only save 1 setting for your zooms, where as the MkIII you can save at at both ends of a zoom lens.

I've had extraordinarily good luck with the focustune tool. If you google it it will come up for you readily. I think it's about 30 dollars.there are manual message which many have had good luck with. I got mixed results. Girl so other tools, but they are much more expensive, at least in my experience. Hope it's helpful

Looks like a good tool. I get a little hung up on this MA stuff. I had problems with my first 7D, spoke with Canon, and they said straight out "You should not need to microadjust your lens". I should have swiftly returned with the response "Then why is it a feature?" But I wasn't thinking fast enough. Canon uses an entirely different technique when calibrating camera to lens (or so I was told), so would it be better shelling out the bucks to have Canon do it the "right" or "better" way? I kow they charge about $150-$200 per lens.

In the UK, during the 1st of year of ownership of a new lens, if you don't think it's right (and assuming you've tried and failed to satisfactorily m.a. it) Canon will look it it for free and adjust it as necessary. This happened to me with my 400mm f/5.6 which I couldn't get right, Canon looked at it and 'recentred the element'. I was then able to m.a. it and now it's spot on. I'm going to have them look at my 35mm for the same reason after the holidays as the results I'm getting with it are inconsistant. The way I see it, if Canon calibrate the lens and say it's correct, then the owner m.a.'s it o their camera, if the results still aren't right then there's only one reason why...

Have you noticed a problem with any of your lenses? If not I recommend filling up this free time with taking pictures rather than micro adjusting.

You beat me to it with the questin ;). I firmly subscribe to the "If it ain't broke don't fix it school." Don't get me wrong - I feel it's wonderful when it's REALLY needed. There's always the danger of making things worse....

'Cause it's so hard to reset the lens back to zero (no adjustment) or reset the camera back to defaults...

Don't get me wrong-- but I had a lens that was OK'ish with no adjustment.. Stopped it down a little- to get better IQ... Finally figured out what adjustment I needed and how to do it - right for this lens--- result -- better IQ wide open... Sometimes- it's needed... Now if Canon made their AF system so that it was closed loop or it automatically adjusted for each lens, that'd be a different story..

Excellent suggestion - perhaps a s/w feature for the 5D Mark IV?;)
