It's more than "like"... it's probably 100% love :)

Owned it once before... but returned it for the 50 1.4 USM... but i'm gonna go ahead and say that the 40 is better in sharpness and overall usage. Sure the 50 is unbeatable in AF speed and f/1.4, but i still prefer the 40.

Gotta keep in mind the 50 1.4 was released in 1993. It's pretty amazing that a ~$200 lens of modern design can beat it in sharpness.

The USM Trilogy is amazing (28, 50, 85) without a doubt, but one thing i hate is that canon can still charge $300-$450 for 20 year old lenses.. wtf?
They release a 40mm pancake with crisp sharpness, 2.8 and somewhat fast AF.. and charge $180 for it.. awesomeness? Oh yea!

I find that the 40mm works well for product shots under controlled lighting as well. It's wicked sharp.

Yeah, I completely agree.

I've also said this in different threads before, but Canon lacks a nice cheap lens that can be used as a standard on 1.6x bodies. I went with the 28mm 1.8, and I love the focusing, but it was really expensive. If I had a Full Frame body, I undoubtedly would've just grabbed a 40 2.8 and called it a day.

I still may pick one up, as a standard for my EOS-1 and to occasionally use on my 60D as well.
