I have the 100 L and just picked up a used 135 L 2 nights ago. It's winter here so I won't use it very much till spring but just shooting around the house I can see the bokeh is stunning and can't wait to try some candids outdoors.

But the same can be said of the 100L, it does things the 135L can't do. If I were to have only one of these it would be the 100L, because I like macro. Thanks for Reading & Good Luck - Jim

Have both, would hate to part with either. Despite being close in aperture and FL, they are quite different lenses IMO. Edward Jenner

If you know someone with one, or rent it for the day. You could also purchase the 135L and compare. If they are too close for you, sell the one you would use the least. Thanks for Reading & Good Luck - Jim

The colour saturation is beautiful between the two lenses. This is one reason I bite my tongue and grab the white lens. 5Dmkiv |5Dmkiii | 24LmkII | 85 mkII L | | 16-35L mkII | 24-70 f/2.8L mkii| 70-200 f/2.8 ISL mkII| 600EX-RT x2 | 580 EX II x2 | Einstein's

Funny how everyone thinks that f4 and f2.8 are sooo different with the 2.8 so much faster, but 2.8 to 2.0 is 'not that much different', even when combined with a 35% increase in FL. Edward Jenner

I usually don't use it on a crop camera, but it worked out well this morning: I love the 100/2.8 USM macro (non-IS/L) too, but for different purposes... EF 100/2.8 USM Macro at f11, 30D at ISO 200, 1/200, diffused 550EX flash w/off-camera shoe cord, handheld (camera & lens balanced on an upside down paint bucket, actually). To me, the 135mm's images are somehow more "artistic" feeling. The 100mm's feel more "clinical/scientific". Maybe it's because the 135mm renders such nice background blur at the appropriate distances that I like to use the 135mm for portraits, especially on full frame. The 100mm doesn't "wow" me the same way for portrait shots, but is superb for little critters and such. At high magnifications, the macro lens' background blur is lovely. Most of the time I use the 135mm at larger apertures, sometimes wide open... I tend to use the 100mm stopped down a lot more. I've used 135/2 with Canon EF 1.4X II a few times and it's fine. Mostly just some test shots (since I use 70-200 instead, when I need 180-200mm), I don't have any sample images online to show, unfortunately. I would expect the 200/2.8 to be a bit sharper and more contrasty, but the 135+TC images seemed quite usable to me. Alan Myers

Honestly I often have both these lenses in my bag at the same time. But of course it depends on your application and what you shoot. As always YMMV. The macro is a decent enough portrait lens for sure. I guess I also went the other way - got the 135L first, then wanted something for macro. I think I'm agreeing with you in that I don't feel that way! Thanks for Reading & Good Luck - Jim

Jan 05, 2013 02:20 | #30 To me; the 135L seems like a bother but every time seeing the images it brings to mind that old saying that 9 women can't make a baby in a month. Likewise; 2000 good images don't make one great one. Somehow; the 135L makes the great ones way more often than any other L I've had the pleasure of using.
