^^^ this lens is perfect for group shots and everything else... Is really wide at 17mm

Thank you. That is good to know.

I think it would be perfect for the situations you have laid out. But if you have the money to swing for the 17-55mm and aren't exactly looking to save, I would say go for the Canon. I do like the lens, but there are some quirks that I do have with the lens, such as the extremely short focus throw and lack of FTM. I've been so used to shooting with the Sigma 30 that sometimes, while my hand is on the zoom barrel, is also intruding on the focus barrel. During the focus, sometimes I prevent the lens from focusing because my hand is in the way. I'll learn to live with it, but if I had enough money to not have to worry about deciding between the Sigma or the Canon, I would have probably gone with the Canon. But the point being, the Sigma is one hell of a lens for what you pay for it.

Thanks for the info I appreciate it. Although touji made a good point but the warranty of the lens is also a big factor for me, I am convinced that this lens will really serve in my purpose. Thanks again. It is really highly recommended by others too.

I am seriously considering getting this lens after debating from canon 17-55mm or canon 24-105L....My main purpose for getting a new lens is to use indoor shots like in a groups, portraits....Someone recommended while gathering info about 17-55 and 24-105.

Now is this lens good for my purpose?

Thanks

I did lots of research (Canon, Sigma, Tamron) before settling on this lens. All the contenders had things I didn't like about them. This one seemed to be the best suited for what I wanted. To be honest, based on the situation you presented I don't think you'd be disappointed regardless of whether you bought the Tamron 17-50 non-IS/Canon 17-55/Sigma 17-50.

The Sigma does very well with center resolution even wide open. I don't regret my choice. If you plan on shooting your birding photos with this lens then the Canon will probably suit you a little better because the servo AF is reportedly a little better in that lens.

I dig this idea, I need to play with it in the future.

I was also between the mentioned lens, and previously owned the tammy 17-50 non-vc. I went w/ the Siggy and paid around $500 used, and I've been very pleased! Very nice weight and build, and I like to have the IS. I admit I haven't used it too much, but it's a nice piece of glass!

One thing I disliked about the Canon vs Sigma, was that the Canon seems a little flat with color. The sigma seems to produce much richer colors than the Canon I tried out.

It's a self portrait made from rice. I should have upped the scale to make it more effective but I had to get 'er done since it was a photo of the day.

What once was full is now empty; the final hours of 2012 are trickling down the drain. I hope 2012 was everything you wanted.
