I wouldn't automatically assume that an unbelievable deal mean the item is stolen, although I concede that it is a concern. After I bought the 7D/10-22, my wife brought up her suspicions that it may be stolen. I checked a stolen camera registry and it wasn't there. Also I have the seller's phone number and name, so that assuages my concerns.

Sometimes people are holding onto stuff that they need to sell off quickly and price it accordingly.

Some deals are good but some are too good to be true. Like for example, refurb 24-105 and someone is selling it for $650 since it was on sale a few weeks ago is believable.
A deal on CL listing the same thing but "NEW" is questionable.

Someone tried this on me once, but I knew it was a scam when I checked my paypal account and saw that there was no real payment. After looking at the fake paypal e-mail, I saw that link addresses were very similar to the real thing, but were obviously not real.

Craigslist is great if you know how to protect yourself. I do Craigslist transactions ALL the time and this is what I do. Hopefully this will help some.

1. ALWAYS ALWAYS meet up at busy places. I live near a grocery store so I always have them meet up IN FRONT of the grocery store. NEVER meet up at someone's house, ESPECIALLY YOURS!!! If they said they would not meet up any where else, it's definitely not worth it.

2. Use your "expendable" email address. Use email addresses that you don't care about. Don't use your personal email address or else they might spam you.

3. Use Google Voice. Google Voice lets you get a unique Google number. You then link this number to your phone. That way, you will have multiple numbers. Your original carrier number, and a Google Voice number. I love this feature because I put my Google Voice's number in the add. If I ever get spammed from that person, I can block that number indefinitely through Google Voice (Voice and Text Message), something I cannot do with through my carrier conveniently.

4. Also, it's something subtle but I will never tell them my real name. If they ever ask I always tell them it's John or Johnny.

I have profited and saved a ton doing Craigslist transactions. You just have to approach every transaction carefully and competently.

Lots of good advice here. I've done alot of CL transactions.

Do keep in mind, most folks do not expect to get asking price. If the price looks high, make an offer. The worst that can happen is you don't get it. If you do a crazy lowball they may ignore you.

Some folks like to haggle.

I saw a Lieca M2 with 3 summicron lens for 75.. was gone in 45 minutes. I also saw a XTI with a 35mm F2, 50 1.8, and kit lens for 200 was too late for that one too. you really do have to check constantly cause the good ones always go fast.

Leica M2 with 3 lenses for $75? Geez, where do you live? I'm shocked that it lasted 45 minutes.

So sometime last year, I picked up the following from a guy getting out of the hobby for only $500 bucks. I was standing there talking to the guy, and his phone was just ringing off the hook (I assume with people wanting to pick this up).. thank god he didn't answer and get someone offering higher

It was a little dusty, and the batteries had been left in the 580EX, but I cleaned it all up and sold off the peices for well over $1,000

Just today I was looking on craigslist at some older Canon bodys (a Canon 20D) and there was guy selling a whole set up with a couple lenses for $400. He didn't write a description of the lenses, but when I saw the red line around one of them my interest was peaked. Upon closer inspection it was a Canon 24mm L. I emailed him right away, but I don't think I was in time. He also had a 50mm 1.4 listed.

Someone out there got a nice deal!

Yup. I never click links on e-mail and whenever it's addressed to an e-mail instead of your name is another thing to look at. Oh and if you ever click on the link, it brings to you a site that looks the same as paypal. So the best thing I always do is log in from a PP app that I have on my phone.

Im still happy with my 135L that I scored for a set of triggers I paid $250 for, +$250 cash.

Of course, I paid the $250 for a pair of TT5s and got the TT1 for free, so it held more value, but still, I think that's a pretty sweet deal for a UZ code 135L that looked like it had been taken out of the box once, shot, person didn't like and put it back in.

Portland, Oregon lol. I even offered him 100 hoping i would get it but still was too late

Got my tamron 17-35 2.8 from a scrap yard that found it in the back of a car they were preparing to scrap. Paid $70.00. I am certainly happy
