Doesnt the 600 work wirelessly the same way? Just mre powerfull?

The 600 can work wirelessly in two ways. It can use the same optical light pulse system the 580, 430 and other flashes use. But it also has a radio triggering system built in.

In terms of power, it's pretty comparable to the 580.

If I were starting from scratch now I would think long and hard about going that route too. Thing is though that I have about $900 in three off camera flashes. If I were to go RF with the 600s and a ST E3 I would be in for over twice that. Meanwhile the new Yongnuo 622s could upgrade me to RF for less than $200.

My need for flash is for wild life so it will more than likely be only be one flash. I like the idea of controlling the flash from the ST-E3-RT, a lot quicker than using the camera menu.

I thought I had read this but it wasnt clear to me.
Just to be clear, So the 600 can work as a master, if mounted on the camera, and wirelessly fire the 430 by RF?

Not by RF. You have to set the 600 to use the optical system. You also cannot have the optical and the RF active at the same time so you cannot mix flashes.

For Canon "Wireless" light-pulse comms, you would need a master flash like the 550RX, 580EX, 580EX II etc, mounted on the camera.

Or you could use a Canon-compliant ETTL cable.

Or, radio triggers.

The pop-up flash on the 7d (and a few others) is a master flash.

No. The 430 can't use the radio system, however, the 600 can act as a master with the radio system. However, the 600 can act as a master for the light pulse system, and the 430 can act as a slave with the light system.

My post was in response to post #2 - "without popup flash".

No. The 430 can't use the radio system, and I don't think the 600 can act as a master with the radio system (but I could be wrong about that last point). However, the 600 can act as a master for the light pulse system, and the 430 can act as a slave with the light system.

The 600 can master via both optical and radio.

So to go the radio way, you'll need not only a 600 EX-RT, but two of them (one master and one slave), or one flash as a slave and the separate flash master ST-E3-RT on the camera.

The 600 EX-RT will work just as good as a 580 EX II in the old, optically controlled slave flash system too.

In the optical system, even when the master is set not to contribute, it will still fire a faint flash to syncronize the slaves. In most cases this sync flash isn't visible in the image, but it can be, under certain circumstances.
