Incredibly crisp, colorful and full of contrast without clipping highlights. Great job. Most struggle with hockey photos. What's your secret? ;)

Wow. Just took another look. These are hands down some of the best hockey images I've seen.

Yes....these are quite nice.
I too would love to know your setup for these shots.
I have been trying to get hockey to look great for a while now.
Looks like you have lots of good lighting in the building.
Are you using strobes as well.
I'm inspired.

Hi, thanks for your kind replies!

I use this setup:

Canon 5D Mark 2
Canon 300mm F2.8 IS

2000 ISO
F3.2
1/640s

The most important thing is to have a custom white balance through all the 3 periods, because the light changes when they turn on/off the lights. So every start of the period i manually set the white balance, shooting on the ice and taking that as the reference photo

If you have other questions i am here ;)

Serious glass.
Shooting through the glass?
Do you also use flashes?
Love your captures.

Wow, look at the torque on that defenseman's stick, reaching around in shot number 2. Nice shots.

That was a bit of luck catching that moment! I don't like the performance of the 5D under "rapid fire" so i shoot only at Single Shot! Sometimes goes well (this time) sometimes i loose the moment :D

fabulously sharp!

i shoot the same settings but through my 70-200 2.8 mkI (7d and 550d) i just dont get images like this...

i use the ice for my white balance and CAN shoot over the glass but from middle ice...

i have to figure out how to PP so i can keep from destroying the tones...

i love your shots

Thanks mate, usually i am located a little before the blueline of my home team! With the 300 i take this closeups on the nearest goalie!

About the PP, usually i apply a warmer/softer filter to the image, apart from this they are untouched! The 300 2.8 is really sharp and doesnt need any unsharp mask that adds noise to an already high ISO image (2000)
