Good point! An OC cord is absolutely essential! The Canon twin-flash rig is useful but not essential. I often set up a second 580EX II as a low power slave in the vicinity to cut the contrast.

Well, it's not essential - I've gotten some great natural light shots from this lens - but it is HIGHLY recommended.

My Hakuba bracket, OC cord, and some other new toys came in today so hopefully I can get to some serious macro fun soon :D

Yes of course...most of my subjects are moving and natural light is a bit tricky at high magnifications, but you're right, natural light is always an option for stationary objects.
