Not a surprise in todays market, overheads etc means costs, people want cheap they cant oblige.

Going to happen more and more.

Cheaper online retailers was always going to be the downfall of Jessops. I can't say I'm surprised by this news today.

When ever possible I have bought from bricks and mortar stores but the gulf between online and the high street seems to be getting wider by the day. I'm supposed LCE are still trading as they are normally more expensive than Jessops.

I too prefer to make my larger purchases from a physical store, and whilst there have a browse and a touchy-feely of other items that interest me. At the Birmingham (UK) store I had the assistant unpack thee tripods for me to play with before I decided which one to buy. It's also nice to look at the other shiny things for inspiration.

I shall miss Jessops.

What other photographic outlets are there in the Burmingham area ?

Lawrence

Bought my camera from London Camera Exchange in Worcester, they usually do quite good offers if you're buying a couple of bits at a time.
Unfortunately they don't have a store in Birmingham City Center (that I know of).

Distressing to lose another physical retailer - I can't believe so many retailers/manufacturers have not addressed the competition from on-line sellers - often 1/3rd cheaper. All sides would like to let us handle the goods before we buy, though I must admit I ignored Jessops for cameras and lenses as waaaaay to expensive. Trusted Jessops for printing - now who will I use?

If you're in London there are plenty of Snappy Snaps around, or Genesis over near Putney.

My last visit to Jessops was just as the 5D3 was coming into stock. I was told that the only way I could have a look at one was if I was definitely going to buy it. A sure-fire sales prevention technique if ever there was one.

Are Snappy Snap OK?

Genesis looks like it would be pricey - is it?

I have to defend them here, this was a directive from Canon. I had a mate who was working there. It lasted for about 3 months i think. Was just that a Canon devised plan to get sales in the street.

Snappy Snaps can be hit and miss as they are a franchise. I worked at the one in Fulham a few years back, and they had just put in a new printer as I was on my way out. Generally i'd prefer them for printing over Jessops any day though. Genesis is a pro lab so will be a bit more expensive, but you get what you pay for.

The branch at the Mall, Cribs Causeway Bristol have a similar idiotic way of doing business.... If you didn't know that they stocked the 5d mkIII or the 7d, there is no way you would know it from just just casually browsing the store! On display they have 2 or 3 650d's and a 60d..... Underneath in the dark cabinets hidden away are the 7d and 5d mkIII. How the bloody hell do they expect to sell one if they are hidden away? It's a similar story in the Nikon section.

Still, i'll be sad to see them go and you have to feel for the staff. Not a good start to their year.

I'm a store manager for them - I'm gutted, but I just hope not all the stores get closed and I survive.

Hope it works out okay for you, but I have to say I won't miss then. Even in comparison to other bricks and mortar stores, they put me off. Cramped stores and never quite the the thing I was after. Instead I frequent the independent, the LCE or the gadget section of John Lewis.
