Interesting. B&H photo has the canon version for pre-order for $499
Any reviews out there for this lens ? I will save $120 if I get this instead of Sigma 17-50
The lens hasn't been released yet, so I doubt there are any reviews (could be wrong).
I have both the Sigma 17-50 and the Canon 15-85. I do a lot of outdoor shooting, mostly of the "snapshot" versus creative sort, and love the 15-85. It rarely leaves my camera, UNLESS I expect to be indoors, evening, or heavy shadow, in which case the Sigma stays glued to the camera. I love the range the 15-85 gives me and the depth of field and low light performance the 17-50 gives me (and I have a Sigma 30mm for when I really need low light). I'm something of a rarity in having both!
Having said that, the Sigma 17-70 is well respected around here. It won't give you shallow depth of field across the zoom range, but it will give you a larger aperture than the Canon 15-85. The as yet unreleased lens apparently has full time manual focus (according to B&H's description), which is a plus. It's also light, and less expensive than either lens you're considering. If you can wait a month or so, it's probably going to be a great lens.
