I am doing lots of baby/toddler photos these days and hate to invest in expensive backgrounds. So I had some huge pieces of cardboard in the garage and I covered one with fabric and one with this wrapping paper. The fabric one is slated for a shoot on Saturday so here is Jayda (who just came to visit) giving me a chance to try out the wrapping paper background. Shot with just window light.

Wrapping paper! what a fantastic idea. I have been thinking about making my own backgrounds too, hadn't considered wrapping paper. Genius!!!

You might get glare on wrapping paper if you use a flash but this was shot in window light.

Great photo, Maureen! I find wrapping paper to have glare as well, but I use a large sheet of foam core with fabric stretch across it and duct taped to the back to make fun backgrounds. a five foot piece of baseboard at the bottom makes it look like a wall too. great job on that baby pic!

Yes, Sue. I also have a huge, thick piece of styrofoam that I pinned fabric to. I am heading out with it in a little bit to do a shoot so I will be anxious to see how it works out. I have lots of fabric so it will be easy to change it up.

Cute! :) Great idea! I am wanting to bet back into shooting babies again... love the idea of cardboard and fabric! Not too heavy and lots of variety! :)

Thanks for sharing Maureen!

I bought two yards of sequin fabric from Wal-Mart and it looks fantastic as a background. Can't recall who, but someone on this forum shared the idea. Just make sure you are shooting wide open and keeping the subject 5-6 feet from the background.

Great shot, I admire your DIY attitude and your creativity.

How big was the cardboard?

What lens is your primary lens?

The cardboard is about 3 ft x4 ft. It was the box of a 42" TV :)

Mainly I photograph kids & babies with my 24-70mm lens or my 50mm/1.4 lens. Both are wonderful.

Two great looking shots, you must have a good way of dealing with little ones.
