OK, just got this off a well known on-line auction site, and as you may already be aware, I am a COMPLETE novice at this game.......but want decent kit.
Without sounding too technical or liking it to astro-dynamic physics........what am I looking for to ensure this is a decent buy?
ie, the box says Hyper Sonic Motor..........what do I need to know that this actually works?
I'd pop into Jessops for some impartial advice.........well, I would have last week!

Does autofocus work? Does it do it relatively quietly & quickly? Take pics at different apertures. If nothing clunks or falls out of the lens, then it is probably working OK.

Checking to make sure the smoothness of the zoom ring is a no-brainer, but you should also do the same for the focus ring when auto focus is off.

it's a good buy...HSM is referring to the auto focus motor...so if it auto focuses, then that works...

OK, when the AF switch is ON, and lens cover on, the autofocus works on the zoom ring. However, when lens cap is off, the autofocus is redundant, and I have to focus manually. The actual focus ring seems to work via manual operation as well. However, when I use my 28-135 canon lens, the autofocus and zoom work great.
Any advice?

So it tries to get focus when a lens cap is on- but won't autofocus without it? That's a new one

ok, and it cycles thru like that, right?...when you take the cap off it doesn't move at all? are you sure it's not just obtaining focus right away? it won't go from near to infinity back and forth...

Nope, it does nothing at all. Been told it doesn't function unless in natural light, then its MF

if the AF ring never moves unless you move it yourself...it's either in manual focus...or it's broken

Do also note the ring itself will *not* move during AF, only the focus indicator in the little window...
