Not really, it has to be the most ridiculously pointless hood I've ever seen.

Here are some cheap alternatives to the Canon OEM hood for the 40mm 2.8 STM https://photography-on-the.net …p?p=14749908#post14749908

Argh.. it's been 10 days since i sent my 40mm in to fix the annoying AF bug, called them today and it's in a UPS van, heading my way!! Woohoo.

I miss it with my whole heart.

Got a new 5D Mark III with this lens and so far I'm very impressed. The color rendering and bokeh are simply stunning.

^^

Nice shot, but if I can offer some cc, next time it would look more realistic if Darth Vader had killed Kenny.

There are some really great images here, these images are really sharp also. Making it easier for me, along with it's cheap price, to decide to add this to my shopping cart along side the 85 f1.8 I plan on getting. I'm just not sure if I will miss having a faster prime if I go with it, like the 28 f1.8 or 35 f2. The 85 f1.8 I will use for my kids sports and portraits and I was looking at the 28 through 40 range for a wider portrait/group lens on my 60D for indoor space limitation reasons.

I never did any extensive testing; took a few test shots with the 28 and the 35 before grabbing the 40, but for the price of those, they didn't blow me away. They seemed a little soft wide open which can be expected (although the 40 isn't soft wide open). I returned my 50 1.8 because I had to stop down to 2.8 or so to get a sharp image and if I've got to do that anyway, might as well have the 40 which is inexpensive and the build quality is really nice. Only thing that I wish was it had a faster AF, but it's not terrible I guess. About what you can expect for $150. I couldn't be happier with the 40.

Thanks for your comments on the 40 and observations on the 28, 35, and 50 lenses, this helps :) Been looking through the forum for days now reading every bit I can about these lenses but I think for the price of this one it's a win/win.

I ended up returning my 40. I really didn't like the 40mm focal length on my 60D, it reminded me of when I owned the 50 1.8 in that I could never stand far back enough to get the shots that I wanted while indoors. I absolutely loved it on my EOS-1, but I don't shoot enough film to justify keeping it around solely as a standard on my film body.

If I ever end up with a full frame DSLR, there's no doubt I'd buy another copy of the 40. I'm sticking with the 28 and my 60D for now though.
