We are well into the basketball season and my middle son's team is undefeated and ranked #1 in WV among single A schools.

Last year I upgraded my camera from Canon 60D to Canon 5DIII. I am very satisfied with my 5DIII, but I feel it's time to upgrade my youngest son's camera as well. Check out the pics below and see if you agree.

Shot by me from the baseline with 5DIII;

Shot by my son from beneath the basket with 60D and 24-70L F2.8;

Britt gets great action shots with his 60D, but the 5DIII will produce better results;

This shot is with my 5DIII and even at full size there's a lot less noise than the 60D (which isn't bad, but could be better.)

We both shot at F2.8 and 640. My ISO was 4000 and Britt's 60D was set at 3200. I could have went with a higher ISO, but didn't need to. He really can't go higher without increasing the noise.

The 1st and 2nd shots from the 60D look a touch backfocused. The 60D is definitely capable of shooting at ISO 6400 but needs more massaging in post.

Your 5D3 has superior AF and high ISO performance (and microadjust for any focusing issues), it's no contest really.

I have a custom white balance set on mine for that gym, and after looking at my photos together with Britt's, it's obvious that he needs to set a custom white balance too. He's currently set to Auto White Balance.

Joe,

Thank you for the feedback.

He shot at 6400 a couple of weeks ago and had to tweak quite a bit in LR to make the images presentable; Noise was very bad. After tweaking they were OK, but pretty much all of the detail was lost. They were fine for Facebook, but he's wanting to get into printing his images so the noise has to go. All of the images above were cropped in LR and shadows were cut back, but other than that nothing else. The noise could be eliminated via LR, but the skin would end up with that plastic appearance....

Britt is 12 years old and it's been an eye opener to watch him improve his style. He began the season shooting over 600 shots per game and now he's down to around 130 shots. He also plays middle school basketball and then gets pictures of the middle school girls games after he plays.

He's off to a great start. What are you thinking about upgrading him to? I think the logical next step would be a 7D or 1D3, but the 1D3 would be kind of big for him to handle.

Chico,

I've been looking at another 5DIII or a 6D; both have the ISO performance that his 60D is lacking. The 7D also has noise issues at higher ISO similar to the 60D. I don't have a 7D, but two other shooters in our area do and I've looked at thousands of their shots and there's no difference from the 60D.

I hadn't considered the 1D3, but I have read that it has decent high ISO performance so I'm going to check into it further. Granted it is larger, but he'll be shooting with a grip on any of the options so they'll all be similar in size to the 1D3.

Price wise the 6D is $1k less than the 5DIII. The 6D also has built in GPS and wifi. We travel to several other countries each year and the GPS would be nice, but I've got it on my P&S Canon's so it's not a deal breaker. Mainly I'm looking for better high ISO performance.

I think you are kinda comparing apples to oranges, a $800 body vers a $3500 body....

The 60d is a very capable camera, you could also try a 85mm....and also you have to go custom white balance.

If you want to upgrade, maybe get him a 7d.....that's where I think am headed after I sell my 50d......here is one with my 50d and a 85mm....it is a great lens for bball.

Paul,

You can pick up a nice used 1dmkiii and the 85 1.8 lens. If you are making $$$$$ with your gear then go for the 5D III this way you will have two of the same bodies and features...
I have a 7D and 1Dmkiii that I use for sport shooting.. one with the 85mm and the other with a 300 2.8.

*** I seen your gear list, you do have the 85 1.8------but I dont see on your want list the 300 2.8....ha ha why not
it helps for shots at the far end of the court....LOL

happy shooting,
Joe

Joe,

I do 'want' the 300 F2.8, but I want the 400 F2.8 First. I'm afraid if I get the 300 I'll settle for that length. ;)

For basketball I found the 50mm f1.6 to be a good lens.

Mark, I went from a 50D to a 7D. Wasn't that difference in image quality. The feel and quality of how the camera was built was better. Recently upgraded to 5d3, and it has made all the difference in my image quality.
