First time trying traditional (self, for lack of volunteers) portraiture.
Used $7.00 clamp lights from Home Depot with daylight bulbs, and parchment paper for diffusion.
C&C welcomed and appreciated.

James; for traditional portraiture, the lighting is almost spot on. I (personal opinion) would raise the fill light to eliminate the second catch light in the right eye and possibly move it just a tad further back to reduce the exposure on that side of the face. Other than that, the lighting is great. Shows what you can do with the basic equipment. I learned years ago, that spending way too much money on equipment such as high powered strobes, etc. did not make you a better photographer nor was it even necessary in most cases.

The lighting looks good. It's a shame you lost the top of your head. I'd have sacrificed a bit of chest and kept the head. That's if it was a cropping issue of course. If you were just doing the best with what you'd framed in the picture then so be it.

Thanks guys, Much appreciated!
Yeah that second catch light is annoying, I'll try moving it around more. I may have a model today so I'll be more free to do more stuff.

I think I cut off the top of the head 'cause I was just looking at some Peter Hurley (external link) headshots.

I absolutely LOVE this camera. I didn't think I would use the flip screen but I use it very often to get low angles. I would never get close to the ground with my 30d... These pics were shot with the tamron 17-50 non-VC and the geese are shot with 70-200 f4L IS.

My sister-in-law was kind enough to sit for me for another try at Headshots with the cheap clamp lights.
