We've had a dump of snow here in the UK... took the opportunity to get out there with the 7D.

hello all, i just got this lens, bought it from a member here. Does your copy make a loud noise when IS goes on and off..like after each time i push the shutter, I hear like a big cassette rewinding noise for half second. I just took a couple pictures of my wife and she even heard it...it was in our work room with no sound...

Well, it does do a rattling sound about 2 seconds after you released the shutter button... its the stopping of the IS motor... but normally its only heard from the photographers perspective... if a photographed subject 3 meters away from the camera heard it, then there might be an issue (or was your wife near the camera to actually 'hear' the sound?)

Do some testing to see if the IS is working and giving you the expected results, and see if you get used to it... I have written here (somewhere, perhaps in this very thread) that it was considerably louder than my kit lens 18-55, but it is a much older IS, and much bigger at that, so it makes sense.

Its comparable to a a muted shutter release sound (in loudness) in my case, others have reported a bit worse, some have reported a bit better (almost noiseless sounds), but we all have it in some or other form.

Rafa.

Hey Zeiter,

How far was your wife from your camera? The IS on my 17-55 is pretty quiet, doubt anyone would hear it except me. My 70-200 is a different story as I've checked on several boards and that lens is quite loud.

Mine definitely makes a noise when the IS kicks in, but I wouldn't say it's as obvious as that in the audio you posted... hth, Chris
