Okay guys I finally got my replacement T4i and I am still loving it. I got a tripod and head and building my collection and taking a lot of photos. I have a question though because I am a little stuck on what lens to get. I have done lots of research and I will explain my dilemma...

My original plan was to get the $110 50mm f/1.8. I got the 18-135mm lens with the kit. I have seen some of the pictures taken with this experimenting with the bokeh and think this would be fun. That was my plan but then I realized I may have the chance to spend a little more and go up to the 50mm f/1.4 that is around $300. I had my mind made up on this after reading a lot of reviews. Well now I may have another chance to spend a bit more. One thing I have been eyeing was a macro lens. Some of the shots I see with macro lenses are amazing and I really thing I could have fun with one. I looked at the 100mm f/2.8 USM that is around $500. They also offer this lens with IS but it is around $900. $900 is really out of my range. $500 is also out of my range but I MAY be able to swing it. I have read that the 100mm without the IS is good as long as its only being used for macro shots but it you go to use it for portraits then you really miss the IS. Like I said I have the 18-135mm so would I still be okay with the IS since I can use it for portrait work? I haven't really found out what I like to shoot yet. I am new to this but honestly I think I would like the macro a bit more than the bokeh work.

Does anyone have any thoughts on which way I should swing? Also I know some will say I should just save up and get the 100mm with IS but that just really won't be feasible so what is listed is the only options. Really the $500 100mm may be too much but I may be able to get it but I want to feel like it is a good choice. Anyways thank you for any input!

Also I am loving the pics you guys are posting!

You might look at the EF-S 60mm Macro and a flash. Probably can find used in your price range.

Just received my T4i w/ 18-135 STM & 55-250 IS II lenses but I have not had much time to really test it out. I was able to snag the 55-250 for an exta $97 with the Kit purchase so that was kinda a no brainer. I am converting from a Sony a580 which I dropped and broke the body. My walk around lens was a Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 Macro, I also had a Minolta Beercan 70-210 F4 & 50MM and 35MM 1.8 lenses. I decided to switch because I just did not want to go to a translucent mirror yet and the a77 was pretty expensive with the 16-50 2.8 lens that you should go with on that body. My buddy has a T3i and loves it and I have used his camera a few times and liked it, so I went with the T4i instead of Nikon. Was thinking about the 5100, 5200 & D7000 vs Canon T4i & 60D.

What is everyone doing with the Highlight Tone Priority settings on this camera? Default is off and when it is turned on you lose the 100 ISO setting. Just wondering under what conditions, if any, should this setting be turned on.

So far I like the feel of the T4i and the 18-135 lens. I was actually looking into getting the new Sony 18-135 for my a580 before I broke it, so this was a nice switch because that length lens is what I was looking for. Touch screen is great and the controls on the body are nice, live view mode is ok but compared to my old Sony it is not as good. Trying to decide between a 35mm 1.8 or the pancake 40mm 2.8 for indoor low light shots. I originally used a 50mm 1.8 for indoors but found it to be a little long for my needs indoors so I went to a 35mm 1.8 and like that length.

I am also new to this forum and hope to learn a lot from being on here, thanks.

I am new to this thread coming over from the T3i thread. So far I'm very pleased with the gear. Here is a shot I took of a sparrow trying to hide from me. The lens is the Sigma 50-500mm OS version.

Thank you, I wish I could have captured the fog better, but I had to laugh when I looked up and that is what I saw.

I'm enjoying this camera. The touch screen is really useful. Good second/ 'backup' camera upgrade from my XT (RIP).

Edit: Oh and the 18-135 STM is pretty sweet. My first lens with IS for crying out loud. Snagged the kit from amazon for $850 (external link)~ seem liked a good deal.

Doesn't seem like it's that popular though? Why is that? Last post on this thread was 2 days ago!

I didn't get the STM lens, just wasn't paying attention. Do you shoot much video? I like the touch screen, too.

Not sure what the deal is with this forum. I came over from the T3i forum. Lots of discussion and lots of fabulous photos. There are some fabulous shots and discussion here as well just not nearly as active.

That is the same deal I got mine from on Amazon, it is about $150 cheaper than anywhere else. I added the 55-250 IS II lens to my kit purchase and got $150 off, so that lens ended up only costing $97. Plus add amazons cash back offer on cameras and lenses and its even cheaper.

I went to Unique Photo by me to get an estimate on my old gear for trade in, of course they were not offering anywhere near ebay prices so I didn't trade any in. But I did leave with the 40mm 2.8 pancake lens, price was the same as amazon and the instant gratification was worth the tax paid. I was looking through their used lenses but they did not have any used 35mm lenses so I left with a new 40mm for $150. It is so inexpensive new right now that I figured why not.

And as I am typing this I FedEx just delivered my Herringbone hand strap, it is like Christmas all over again...

^ yeah seemed like a really attractive package at a good price. To be fair, I don't know what the market is like out there from other makes, but it's not like I'm anywhere close to changing systems.

I don't shoot much video but I'm planning to do a lot more. So the T4i was really ideal for me with this kit.

There's also a lot of situations where I need to go from short focal length to long and it was a pain in the but because I needed to change lenses on my 5D2 all the time, and didn't have a long focal range zoom for it. This really hits all the spots for me!

After using this for a while I keep expecting the 5D2's screen to come on while shooting

Is there a cost effective plate or way to attach a loop for a hand strap to bottom of the T4i and keep access to the battery door? Just installed the Herringbone hand strap and the plate it comes with blocks the door so I would have to unscrew every time I need to charge battery.

I know about the pro media gear plate but it is fifty bucks and there has to be something cheaper to help me out. I don't plan on getting a battery grip so that option is out.

I have the Cotton Carrier plate and I go thru the same hassle to change the battery!
