2012 was a great year for Auroras around the world thanks to an active sun. I am lucky enough here in Edmonton and Calgary to witness these light shows. Here are some I have taken in Edmonton from my parent's place (I moved to Calgary for school and unfortunately live too close to the inner city to have a good view). SHARE YOUR AURORA PHOTOS FROM 2012 HERE! :)

My sister and I enjoying the show, luckily she saw them coming home one night and woke me up!

This aurora storm lasted until morning, people from Lapland told that the sky was full on red just before the sunrise because of northern lights.

This was a very intense but short burst, I think the maximum lasted like ten minutes before quickly sizzling away. This is a spherical panorama, you can view it interactively here (external link).

The Spherical panorama is awesome, especially when you start looking at your other shots the underwater stuff is so cool how did you do these? Where can I find some info on how to do it?

I live at pretty low latitudes in the States, so auroras are a fairly rare event. That said, I was able to see a couple of great shows this summer.

That was in Maine this past summer. I've since moved cross country and further north, so hopefully I can see more soon.

Those are awesome! How often do you see them in yellowknife? I'm moving up there after may to live for a while :D Are they visible in the Summer/Fall months or does bright night sky wash them out too much?

They are not visible in the summer and early fall, no. The sun doesn't actually set so the sky is too bright. Early spring, all throughout winter, and most of fall however, they're out almost every night to some degree. You're picking a great time to move here! The summers are beautiful!
