The 40D is Canon's first camera with all AF points being cross-type, so the advice to use center point only isn't too valid.
It's also Canon's first camera to provide a cross-type high precision AF point, at the center, but the other points are far from useless. It's not at all the same difference as with cameras of the 20D class, like the 5D mark II and similar.

Loved my 40D, but loved my 50D even more (you can find them for $400 used). I liked the higher resolution LCD screen- 920,000 screen dots vs 230,000 screen dots. A lot of my pictures looked soft on my 40D, but looked just fine on my computer. Also, the option of micro adjustment is nice to have! Other upgrades are 5 more MP, weather sealing, faster processor, and the option to add HD video via Magic Lantern. The 40D is still very capable, and a great value nowadays.
