It's so wide! Aha. Still getting used to it after using it as a normal lens on my 60D. Not sure if you can really tell how wide it is with this one, but yes:

Ohh, You guys made me do this! Very nice pictures in this thread so I just bought the lense myself. Skipped lunch so I could go to local retailer. Can't wait to start making pictures with it :)

Welcome to the club. Good shooting.

I have 28mm and would like to have 35mm instead. As you mention, money is the reason why I still don't have it. I never really shot with my 28mm since I bought it. I know it's a shame, but i always prefer 50mm due to smoother bokeh, so my 28 is gathering dust. I should give it a try I guess.
Anyway i'm sure 28 will perform fine on FF

I use mine on the 5D all the time. Like many others, I initially bought it as a normal prime for crop. It wasn't even my first choice, but after several disappointing attempts with Sigma's 30mm f/1.4, I found a used 28mm f/1.8. Glad I did. Modest price for great performance. Sure it's a bit hazy wide open, but stopping down 1/3rd stop is enough to get rid of that.

On full frame the wide angle/shallow DoF effect really shines though. I'd never used it before since that look doesn't exist on crop, but it does very well at f/2. Tons of vignetting though, but I usually leave it. Only really remove it even I need to crop a photo and I'd end up with uneven vignetting.

For a budget setup, you can't do better than minimalist kit of 5Dc, 28mm f/1.8 and 85mm f/1.8 and maybe a 50mm f/1.8 in between.

Just joined the forum.
I am looking for a prime lens wider than my beloved 50mm f/1.8. The 28mm f/1.8 seems like a viable candidate. I shoot a lot of concerts at a local music venue and need wide aperture without breaking the bank. It's a small venue, and usually I can get really close to the stage.
Until now I have used my Tamron 17-50 for the wide shots (e.g. of the whole stage), but I would like a prime that lets in more light.
Have read through this entire thread and have enjoyed your wonderful photos and good advice. Thank you!
Last weekend, I borrowed a 28 1.8 from a friend to try it out at a concert before maybe buying my own.
I was actually a bit disappointed at first, when I did some kitchen table test shots comparing the 28 1.8 to the 50 1.8. The 28 was definately not as sharp as the 50.
But after shooting the concert and picking out the 20 best photos, I found out that 16 out of the 20 were shot with the 28. And when cropping/resizing to 1200x800 px (which I usually do before uploading to Flickr) and adding an unsharp mask, the photos are plenty sharp. So I think the 28mm lens passed the test.
Here are the 20 shots from that concert:
http://www.flickr.com …67052603/with/8399625204/ (external link)
You should be able to see which are shot with the 28 and the 50 by looking at the EXIF data to the right under Additional info.
In some of the photos I used my 580 EX flash off camera with a small Rogue FlashBender attached (including the diffusion panel).
Now I have to find out if I should buy the 28mm here in Denmark second hand or if I can wait until April, where I will be going on a trip to the US. The prices in the US are about 30 percent lower than here in Europe, so I can get a new one in the US for not a lot more than what a used one would cost here at home. Think I'll wait - I like the thought of having a good reason to go to B&H or Adorama in NYC while the wife's shopping clothes :-)
There seems to be some bad copies of the 28mm out there, though. Can anyone give some good advice as to what to look out for (and how?) when testing the lens in the store?

yeah I was disappointed when I got mine as well mate not being as sharp as some as the others. thats why I hardly shoot wide open on it.

never used it in low light or indoors so that could be an issue for me and you

I can suggest to take a few photos around in the store if you can, even if its just near the counter, Im not sure if they let you do that to be honest. but take some images wide open and different apertures, then id suggest zooming in on them on the camera to check the focus sharpness.

either way, its not a terribly expensive lens at all, new or used. but try not to compares it to the 50 and its glory, haha.
