..I suppose this is the right subsection? If not, someone move it, that's cool.

But, what is anybody using, here? I'm starting to want to redefine/rearrange my setup and workflow, and I wouldn't mind getting a good-sized LCD monitor and stand. Anyone doing this? If so, what brand/model monitor are you using? It would be nice to have a monitor I can plug directly into the 7D without a computer adding its own special blend of mayhem to the mix.

Here's an example, something clipped from a video on YouTube"

It LOOKS like the camera is tethered directly to the LCD. Can't really tell. If not, and I have to use a laptop, OK, whatever. Ultimately not a deal breaker or even an issue.
I just want to get an idea of where to start looking because I can easily be overwhelmed by model numbers, manufacturers, features, etc. More importantly, I want to know what everyone is happy with in terms of color and resolution.

I haven't really been needing to go this route, these past few years, but things are changing.

Anyone?

You may have better luck asking in the Computer subforum. :)

Also on your other question.

Very helpful post & I will try that with the Canon software. However, I ocasionally want to do something a little different.... Sometimes I want to shoot tethered to a monitor only (no computer) so that I / Model can see shots as we progress. Can that be done with a 7D and a HDMI mini to HDMI cable?

With either a standard monitor, with video input, or a HD monitor with HDMI input, you can get the camera's rear LCD do show up on that monitor instead. You'll not only see the pictures, but everything else as well, like menu pages, on the monitor.

This is also another option:

Will allow you to put your remote monitor anywhere (and also use it to control your camera from anywhere in the room).

Yeah, see.... like I said.... wasn't sure which subforum would be best, since I'm hoping to avoid the computer altogether, which then makes the LCD an 'accessory'.

Do you use your 7D for video? Because I think that's the only time it's useful.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I think if you attach an external monitor to your camera, and want to see what the lens sees with it, you need to go into live view mode. When you do this, you lose phase detect auto focus, and are limited to the much slower contrast detection.

Video shooters don't care, because they manually focus anyway, but it matters to still photographers.

I have on a couple of personal shorts and some concept tests, but there are some things on the horizon this year that look for me to use the video option more. It would be nice to be able to do post-shot viewing in a traditional still session, though.
