Just one question,
How long did you wait to be able to catch that view/moment?
(I suspect you have thought about it before it happened)

If you aren't already using it, I highly recommend "The Photographer's Ephemeris"

http://photoephemeris.com/ (external link)

I knew when the moon was rising and roughly where in relation to where I was shooting from as I had had some luck with catching landing traffic through the full moon the previous month.

IMAGE: http://crosswindimages.com/img/s8/v85/p1354994850-4.jpg

I actually headed to that spot because we had some clouds and I was hoping for some dramatic skies at sunset but airport traffic was departing to the east instead to the west so we were shooting takeoffs instead of landings.

The clouds began to clear and the moon finally began to "read" and we could see that the departure path and the moon's azimuth were going to briefly intersect (only about three planes actually touched the moon's disc)

So I had just enough time to bust out the Gitzo/Wimberley and add the 2X before this SW 737 flew right through the moon.

So serendipity with a touch of forewarning I guess. :D

There's never any guarantee that plane and moon will hit perfectly but you can narrow the odds...
