I'd probably need to add 1 or 2k but either:

1DX + 300.28
or
400 2.8

I would actually try to go to the dark side and try out their gear:

Nikon D800
Tamron 24-70 f/2.8
Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR
Nikon 85mm f/1.8
Elinchrom Quadra
Elinchrom Deep Octa
Speedotron BD

For me, it'd probably be

Canon 5D3
Canon 50mm f1.2L
Canon 135mm f2L
the new Sigma 180mm f2.8
Canon Speedlight 600EX-RT

These would be similar set ups of my gear now, but only FF and much better.

Comes out to be $7,441, so I'd probably get a nice tripod and light stand, possibly a ring flash too.

Are we assuming we own nothing at all and starting fresh? What do we shoot?

Used 5D3 = 2500
Used 5Dc = 700
Used 35L = 1000
Used 85 1.8 = 350
Three LP160s = 470
Elinchrom Quadra (2x) 2400
Skyport transmitter set: 150

That leaves me about $2500 for misc stuff like light stands, soft boxes, memory cards, camera bags.

That's what I was assuming, but I'm a bit confused because the OP never specifically said what we are to assume. Others are answering as though they are just adding $10,000 worth of gear to what they already own.

The OP does say something about coming into some money, so I'll assume that I just get $10,000 and get to do with it what I want.

1. Sell my 400 f2.8 IS (version 1) - I just added $6,000! Now I've got $16,000 to use!

So, with the $16,000, I'll get:

New 600 f4 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $13,000

Used 1D mark 4 . . . . . . . . . . . $3,000

I'm done!

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

EF 500mm f/4 L IS II

+1. Afterall, if I came into $10K I would still have everything in my sig that I have now.

Then sell my present 500mm f/4L IS and spent that money on some other toys like a 70-300 L for rookery shooting, a set of filters for landscapes, a large and a medium Storm case to make draging things around easier. That would still net a few thousand for some local bird shooting trips.

My apologies for not being more specific.
My intention was adding to what you already have.
That is why I didn't specify a body.

The original title that I coped specifies "equipment" but in my rulebook tickets to Europe, Africa or Asia would be valid choices to spend it on too.

Assuming I don't have anything and need to get ALL my gear for 10k, I'd say:

- 5DmkIII ($3500)
- 17-40L ($839)
- 50mm f/1.2 ($1600)
- 70-200mm f/2.8 IS ($2500)
- 100mm f/2.8L macro ($900)
- Manfrotto 550XProB + 498RC2 ballhead ($240)
- Canon 580exII + 430exII ($750)

For around 10K dollars.

5DmkII, 60D, Canon 50mm 1.8, Canon 85mm 1.8, Canon 17-55mm 2.8 IS, Canon 70-200mm 2.8L, Tamron 70-300mm, Sigma 10-20mm 3.5, Canon 430ex II, Canon TC 2x.
