Lovely photos!

How do you all get such nice colors from the flare? Meaning the little spots that get that rainbow-y coloring...does it depend on the lens?

Here's a couple of my sun flare shots. I also use the method of using my hand to block the sun to focus that Jordan uses.

^ It's the 85mm F/1.8 on a 5DII. You can see the EXIF on the original images on Flickr.

Huh.

I hate my 85mm 1.8 more than all my other lenses combined so that's somewhat perplexing.

no filters for me. i meter the scene w/o the sun in the picture, see what it gives me and set that in manual as a starting point for exposure. then its just playing with the settings here and there and how much sun to include.

Just went through the entire thread! I can't comment on how many i've saved to my hard drive for ideas, there are so many amazing shots!
What mode do you use to to meter with? Meter the subject in TV with your hand blocking the sun for your shutter speed and set exposure to 0+/- and aperature to 1.4-2.8 then go with that setting in manual when you find the right setting ? I want to take some of these photos, currently I have a 50mm 1.8 to play with ( seems like the best option out of my kit? ) I want a 50mm 1.4 so bad! I would love to try with my dads tenants 1.2L but I would feel a bit awkward asking even though we chat about photography, just such an expensive lens to lend to a 23 year old noob so I wouldn't blame him for not letting me use it I would hate for anything to happen to it even though I am very careful with my equipment and am fortunate enough to have it(also considering its his new glass :D)

Anyways, these are by far my favorite types of shots!! I want to shoot portraiture professionally one day and this is something I really want to know how to create! I am fairly new to the photography world so obviously with time and patience the shots will come but all of these amazing photos are making me sick, and filled with joy seeing how amazingly they are done!(the cute models don't hurt either :D haha)
