Canon admits: Disappointed with the EOS M.

Dpreview posted an interview with Masaya Maeda Managing Director at Canon, and he said two interesting things about the EOS-M system

1) The Canon EOS-M didn’t sell as expected.
2) Nevertheless there will be new lenses for the EOS-M system within 2013.

It's not all bad though - one more prediction comes from MR-Maeda: There will be “an increase in the number of full-frame models”.

At least he admits part of the problem is lack of lens options. Sure you can adapt EF lenses, but it kinda defeats the purpose of the camera and isn't ideal as a everyday solution.

Despite this understanding, he concedes that the EOS M hasn't yet been fully able to exploit this market. 'Looking at worldwide results we've seen users are limited to certain regions - we're seeing very positive sales in Japan and South East Asia, looking beyond that we haven't established market share yet.'

which is not surprising. consider in the US it's almost a online presence only camera, while spec-wise it's general consumer oriented.

Too little .. Too Late .. Too Slow ... Too Expensive !

Canon DSLR sales are selling poorly. Canon across the board is doing poorly. In Q3 of 2012 they pretty much stated that the 5DMkIII did little to help their falling sales. There are many factors that affect their bottom line like exchange rates, the economy, floods and such, but they have not done well in some time and 2013 does not look better for them.

Canon still makes about 3x what Nikon does, so I suppose "poor" would have to be defined.

Just about every manufacturer in the world would love to do as poorly as Canon is doing right now.

Canon has been on a downward trend for the last several years, as far as I'm concerned. If I weren't so heavily invested in Canon lenses, I'd probably just sell it all and pick up a D600.

That they have. In 2010 you heard phrases like "Canon destroyed Nikon in 2010 global DSLR market share" with a nearly %50 market share. Today it's "Canon still in the lead" but by one or two percentage points. It's not as if the sky is falling but from once not so long ago being the market leader in every market niche Canon has let them all slip pretty much across the board. The EOS M is a down right embarrassment when compared to the competition especially considering how late they came to the party. It would not surprise me if 2013 is the year Canon looses market leadership in the DSLR market segment.

I don't know how they expect the M to compete with Fuji X and Sony NEX. It's like the Cubs vs. well, anyone.

Seems a Slight Contradiction between these two statements - LoL !

Canon is just resting on its laurels.

Data says otherwise, at least based on Japanese data from 2012. If you know data for other markets, please link to it:

In Japan, Canon had almost 29% of the total interchangeable market. Nikon had 25%. But, 1/4 of Nikon's sales came from the Nikon 1 (again in Japan). So that would put them at more like 19% just for DSLR cameras. Canon only had 2% of their sales come from the EOS M, so their DSLR figures would be in the 28% range.

So 28% vs 19% in Japan for DSLR in Japan. Is Canon really losing DSLR crown?

Yes, the EOS M is a flop, even against the small sensor Nikon 1, but just speaking in terms of DSLR sales, I don't know if I can agree with your doomsday predictions. Japan is a big enough market, I think we can use it as a reliable example.
