im thinking about selling all my canon gear and get Olympus E-M5.

Look at sig at current gear.

Has anyone done that before? Any thoughts.

I just did. Sold my 60D, Canon 24-105mm, Canon 85mm, Canon 60mm, Sigma 30mm, Sigma 10-20mm, Rokinon fisheye, and last lens left to sell is Tamron 70-300. Now I have what's in my signature plus Oly 9-18mm on the way. Very happy with a switch and no regrets.

Yefim ~ Olympus OM-D E-M1, Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8, Panasonic 25mm f/1.4, Olympus 45mm f/1.8, Olympus 75mm f/1.8, Olympus 40-150mm, Olympus 9-18mm, Rokinon 7.5mm, FL-600R.

lots of people have done it. I thought about it but the m43 cameras suck at continuous af, like for sports and fast action. the tech is not ready yet.

if all you do is go on photo strolls or portraits, still life, landscape, etc then it is a great smaller option.

if you want the best iq you can easily carry around then the ff is a better option, especially if you shoot more than what's listed above.

I've been contemplating the switch as well. I have a FF DSLR system, however my shooting requirements have changed. I'm no longer taking paid gigs, and shooting 100% for my own pleasure - landscapes, urban, my family, documenting daily life. I picked up a Fuji X10 which has been a breath of fresh air - compact, light on accessories, and something I'm more likely to take with me.

For the OM-D/E-M5 I see the same benefits - but I need to answer the questions - with an interchangeable lens system like this WILL I actually take it out and take more pictures, and WILL I be satisfied with the image quality in the end.

if you like to use servo then count m43 out. if you are a one shot af kinda then go for it!

Yup. Ditched my 5Dc, 135L, 17-40L, and a few others. I miss the 135L greatly, but love the smaller camera and addition of video.

Tempting, but not ready to make the jump quite yet. Presenty have a 5DII kit and OM-D EM-5 system. Still evaluating. However, will have to admit, I find myself picking up the Oly a lot more that the 5DII. Is it just a fascination with the newer gear, or a transition in progress? Time will tell.

Add me to the growing list. I had a 5D2 and a bunch of L glass, and it's all gone! I loved the quality and capability of my Canon stuff, but it was just too heavy, huge, and valuable for me to lug around very often. It was literally the only camera I had (apart from my cell phone) but too inconvenient to take most places. I'm not a studio photographer, I don't need a FF camera that can shoot with low noise at ISO 12800, and I finally managed to admit that to myself. (I suspect that a large percentage of people on this message board could come to the same conclusion if they were honest with themselves)
Now I've got a much smaller setup with negligible loss in image quality or capability (I mean in practical, real-world terms) and I'll be way more likely to take pictures now.
I guess I decided to stop pixel-peeping and obsessing about whether I had the newest and most capable equipment when I had absolutely no good reason to care about those things. I think that M43 is a much more sensible option for the 'prosumer' market, while DSLRs are still necessary for professionals.

For video, sure. For stills they're pretty similar. I don't think the GH3 sensor has gotten the DxO treatment but samples I've seen point to it being around the same ballpark as the E-M5. If it's any better or worse it's not by much.

For my use the E-M5 has one crucial feature that the GH3 doesn't: in-body IS. Since Panasonic don't do IBIS, they'd have to put together a truly amazing camera that is significantly better than Olympus options for me to get a Panasonic camera. Too bad because except for the lack of IBIS they make some really nice cameras.

That's the gist of it for a lot of us. The size and weight savings far outweigh the image quality loss. I'm much more likely to have my m4/3 kit with me (all the time) than I am my DSLR kit (only for deliberate photo outings), and isn't having your camera with you what it's all about?

Precisely. If the M43 system had been available back when I bought my first DSLR, I probably never would have bothered with one.

To be honest, I am now far too spoilt by being able to shoot fast prime lenses in combination with the best image stabilisation system I have ever used, to choose the GH3 (or just about every other ILC) over the E-M5. It still looks like a fabulous camera, however.
