Lenses first always.

Nick

wrong answer...

body in this case.

Moving from crop to full frame > updating lenses > updating camera of the same format.

for those that say lens first, you will be shown how flaw the logic will be.

Compare this, the 85mm 1.8 on FF(5D2) vs 85 1.2 on crop(50D)
http://www.photozone.de …19-canon_85_18_5d?start=1 (external link)
http://www.photozone.de …canon85f12mk2apsc?start=1 (external link)

the 5D2 + 85 1.8 will cost less than the 50D + 85 1.2 combo or newer crop.

based on the numbers, the 5D2 + 85 1.8 wide open crushes the resolution of the 85 1.2 at all aperture settings... I'm fairly certain the 5D2 + 50 1.4 would easily outresolve the best crop + 50 1.2. Even the 5D2 + 50 1.8 would likely outresolve the crop combo...

I would go for 5D2 in this case. 50L is a bit unstable, especially if you pick up a bad copy that is plagued with focus shift etc.

OP is SOL if his 50L copy needs focus adjustment on his Rebel.

A 5D mark II is a much more significant upgrade than a 1 stop gain in aperture.

Since you already have a 50/1.8, I'd take the 5D2 every time. It's simply a wonderful camera and at the prices they go for now, it's an absolute bargain.

The 50L.... well there are lot's of fast fifties. I'd wait a while to see whether Sigma comes out with something special.

Several cameras and more glass than I will admit to.

I would vote for body in this case. A 5d2 will be quite a marginal upgrade from OP's current body imo. Just my 2 cents :)

When I went from a Rebel to the 5D II, the very first picture was "WOW" and continues to be. A Rebel can't complete with the 5D II, that's why there is such a price difference.

Your rebel doesn't have MFA; so go for the body upgrade. If you had MFA; I'd say 50L.

If the body is going to come soon after, then i would get the lens first. If you have to wait a while until you save enough for the second purchase then get the body first which will be a huge improvement in IQ over what your shooting with now.

I think the OP could get the body and the 50mm 1.4 if he is determined to upgrade both pieces. If you get the lens used I would imagine it would hold a pretty good resale when you go to get the 1.2 L

In this case, I wouldn't even entertain the idea of getting 50L over 5DII. Definitely, 5D2.

Body.

IMO a 50/1.8 on a 5d2 is a better combo than a 50l on a t3i.

Just to make sure, you know that the 50mm will be a very different lens on a FF? Have you had a chance to try out that focal length on a FF before?

Yep. It would be better to say a 85/1.8 on a 5d2 is better than a 50L on a Rebel.

The jump from a crop to FF is huge; get the upgraded body, you absolutely won't regret it. Cleaner high ISO images, increased DOF ... it's something you need to experience to really appreciate. If you're unsure, rent them both and you'll see what I mean. Your nifty fifty will be a brand new lens on a FF body.
