Carnival in Germany falls into two categories: northern Germany, where it is strongly influenced by military traditions like marching bands, and southern Germany, where it is predominantly influenced by representations of spirits and ghosts driving out the winter. The latter is the so-called Alemannic Carnival.

Here are some shots from yesterday. I shot in RAW+JPG. These are some quick ones derived from the JPGs, often SOOC. I mostly kept the Exifs intact. (1 & 2 cropped)

Shooting with fixed (manual) time and aperture, letting the automatic decide on ISO.

Thanks, Rick. - Yes, it's Fastnacht, Fasnacht, Fasnet, Fasching over here, depending on the village you live in: the night(s) before fasting, for the non-German-speaking.

Some Swiss groups were there too.

And the locals have adopted Guggamusig too

Not so much as they do in Basel. I'd love to be there for the Morgestraich someday.

I had another go this past weekend:

Bystanders, especially girls, run the risk of being the target of pranks, such as getting a "bath" of straw & confetti:
