I was looking for birds yesterday in the Caledonia State Park, South PA, with very little luck. On the way back home this guy was standing not too far from the road so even though sun was almost down I could still manage a few (underexposed) shots.

Is this a red shouldered hawk? What features do you see that will Id one?

Thanks for looking!

This is a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk. You can tell by the dark "waist band," the facial pattern, the overall bulk and size and there's even a hint of red coming into the tail in the last picture.

Thank you!
This is the first time I could see a hawk from my 100-400.
Amazingly imposing, fearsome creature!

I agree with you that it is a juvenile Red-tailed, but both adults and juveniles can have the "waist band". Depending on what color phase the bird is, and the region of the U.S. in which the bird inhabits.

The 100% foolproof field mark for Red-tailed is the dark patagial bar. This is the dark bar at the leading edge of the wing (ventral side). If you look at your photos of the bird in flight, you can see this dark bar. No other hawk has this bar. Of course, on the dark morphs of this species, this field mark is not visible.
