she didnt have bulb fixtures in them yet so i couldnt turn em on

Numbers 3 and 4 might need something other than a white background. The white shade could use some separation and another color wouldn't wash out any patterns (if there are any).

Other than that, I would expect to see the oblique shots in a catalog of lamps just as you've shown. The shots that are square to the camera could be used as smaller insets because they don't give the whole picture by themselves.

thank you. i was afraid a black backdrop would make it harder to see the dark wood. are grey tones ever acceptable in product photo? Ive never seen it

The darker wood (walnut?) with the barrel shade (#5 and #6) . . . the shade looks wider at the top than it should (distorted). I also see some moire in #5 that should be fixable in Lightroom.

Otherwise, these look great!

Peruse magazines like http://www.finewoodwor​king.com to see how it should be done...note that most of them are taken in situ.

A white background is just fine for these and a 3/4 view is the way to go....it adds depth and shows the products 3 dimensions. I would not go out of my way to eliminate (soft) shadows as this also adds depth.
I would disagree with viewing images in DYI magazines as these are usually the user/builder that submits the photos in not very flattering environments. Stick with pro mags esp design sites/mags.
