Lens Upgrade 100-400L?

Love my 100-400. Will post pics from it later.

Works great for small things also

Wow. What great pics. Now I am leaning towards the 100-400 again.... Maybe it is a better choice for my first long lens. I could get the 70-200 II IS and 1.4 extender later if I find the 400 is more than I need.

Or it is coin flip time as I can not afford both.

it all depends on how often you use the focal lengths. If you're shooting birds "floating down the river" the 400mm prime will be better but the 100-400 is better for versatility - wildlife, sports, etc. If you've shooting in low light obviously a 70-200 2.8 II will be better (but more expensive !)

If you don't really need the 400mm reach the 70-200 and 70-300 are probably better choices for IQ than the 100-400L. The 70-200 2.8L will give you more options in low light then the 70-300L and is notorious for great IQ. So of those two... do you need more light or more reach? If you need both, the 70-200 2.8L and an extender may be the ticket.

Then there is the lower light ability of the 70-200 2.8L... I do love shooting in low light.

I have a drift boat and do a lot of fishing / camping on my floats. How do you keep your camera dry?

The riskiest time for getting the camera wet in the kayak is getting in or out of the kayak so that is when I use it most. The camera with lens retracted will go through the zip opening of the Watershed Chattooga dry bag easily. The bag has plenty of room inside for other stuff as well. It has loops to secure it to the boat and handles to carry it. I cut a piece of sleeping bag pad that lays in the bottom and curves up the sides of the bag.

It is the best dry bag I found after a lot of research. What sold me was that it has a heavy duty rubber ziplock-type closure rather than just rolling up the top like other bags.

I have a 17x60 Willie Boat. Not very tippy unless I hit a rock. This is from yesterday. Did a float down the Clackamas River. Cloudy and overcast and not many critters were out and couldn't fool a fish either.

Well I just pulled the trigger on a Canon 70-200 F2.8L IS USM II from Maxed Out on the classifieds. Them things aint cheap!!!

Now I'm broke for a while and will not have any money for film, chemicals or photo paper.

Shot with my 100-400L. This one is not shot through glass but I have others that are. I am steady hand holding but find I get a better keeper rate with a monopod. The full size file prints a sharp 8x 10. This is through glass!

If your looking for a long lens, get the 100-400mm. The 70-200mm zooms are some of the sharpest/best zooms made, but they aren't long enough to compete with the 100-400mm.

Best bet is to one day own both, but for wildlife, get the 100-400mm first.

I went with the 70-200 2.8 II and if I need more I will get a 2x converter. I've got the 7D now and will not be focusing on birds, mainly outdoor / nature / mountains / rivers / fishermen / fish etc. I'll see how it works for me.

I also wanted the 2.8 for low light. I love shooting late and night shots.

Some of the shots with the 100-400 are just excellent. It was a tough choice and I'm not sure I made the right one.

Believe me; there's a use for having both in your bag. You'll find out soon enough if you made the right choice for your own shooting, for now. You have one hell of a piece of glass coming your way, though.
