OverclockGT3, those are super sharp and vibrant. The first shot is very impressive.

If you need to choose between the 85mm 1.8 or the 50mm 1.4 which one would it be? and why ? I have 50 now but would the 85mm give me nicer image quality, sharpness contrast or color?

Amazing picture! Can you tell us somehting about your workflow ? And waht lens did you use? Looks like 3D almost!

Kind regards,

Johnny

Thanks for the compliment Johnny! I used my 85mm lens and took several verticle photos. I can't remember exactly how many but I'd say roughly 8 or so.

Workflow:

adjust contrast/exposure in ACR (very slight boost with parametric curve)
a little split toning with yellow highlights with slighty blue shadows
saved to JPEG's
opened and stitched with CS5
resized and smart sharpenend

and then posted on flickr :)

I used to shoot my 10d and got very comfortable with it's sensor and manipulating colors. With the 5d, as long as I expose properly (most scenes), I don't really tweak colors much. I do basic contrast adjustments, slight cross process and I'm done. The 5d has magic.

The 3d look comes from the shallow depth of field. I think I shot somehwere around f/2.8 maybe f/4 max.

Very nice!

Here's a shot from my first night trip with the 5D, pretty tricky to get things right after having live view and being able to see clearly on a bigger screen etc, but was quite happy just to get this. All a learning curve :D This was with a 50mm 1.8, just waiting on my 24-105L

Thanks! I rely on the histogram...that's about it, habit from my 10d..haha I don't even know what live view or bigger screen even mean!

It depends on what you are shooting of course. But for portraits its hands down the 85 1.8. The longer lens forces you to work at distances that limit the amount of perspective distortion you get, especially if you are using traditional portrait framing. Personally the 50 strikes me as a rather lame focal length on a full frame camera. Not long enough for flattering portraits. Too long for interesting perspective manipulation, but thats just me. I've felt that way even back to the film days when pretty much every camera shipped with a 50.

But that's part of the fun (and sometimes annoyance) of the 50! Also for portraits I find the 50 is still useful... A fifty gets in a nice slice of environment.

As far as the original question goes, it depends on your style. I prefer 50 over 85... It's a toss up between 35 and 50 but the fifty is easier to use.
