At the end of the church ceremony, he tracks me down outside and asked if he could borrow my 85L to shoot portraitures of the B&G...

I've been following this thread..

I agree, the pro's request was stupid:
1. I would never consider borrowing/lending a valuable lens to/from a stranger.
2. He is doing a wedding, if he has never used an 85L, it would be a mistake to cut his teeth on the B&G portraits.

The benefit the 85L provides over his own equipment is the shallow DOF and accompanying beautiful blur. That shallow DOF can also be a challenge (especially at first) and is the reason why he should not use it w/out experience for wedding shots. (I am assuming he never used one before).

But I am also always surprised when I see, in this forum, the "equipment doesn't matter" kind of comments. The 85L does have some clear (actually, blurry :) ) advantages over the 24-70 and I can understand why he may have wanted to give it a try; it was just stupid (IMO) because of the circumstances (i.e., stranger, wedding).

Truth be told, a random using my gear is probably so $hit scared of dropping it that they make more of an effort not to.

That's a dangerous assumption. From my experience, the way different people treat "stuff" varies greatly. To some people it is just: "stuff."

I drove my cousin's husband to the airport after a family reunion a few years ago, in my new car (less than 2 months old). We get the airport, he gets his bags out of the trunk, then walks to the front of the car and swings his large suitcase up on the hood to open it an get the tickets out (this was not done gently). Now I know in my gut it is only a car, but I couldn't help myself, I wanted to ring his freaking neck. I suspect though, that he treats his own car the same way and this was nothing to him, it never even occurred to him that...

Another time, I loaned my 70-200 to a friend that I know well and thought would take good care of it. It came back w/out the hood! I asked him about it a few days later: "Oh, it had a hood, I didn't notice, I never use them." What?! @#$%^&! I waited a few weeks while he (supposedly) looked for it: no response. It wasn't until I gave up and bought a new one that it turned up in one of his light bags and I finally got it back. And this was a person I knew and trusted.

I know it is just stuff, but if you value it, don't assume others will.

I don't even bother explaining anything when people say that. I just politely agree.

My response to that comment is always, "Yup. And it takes pretty crappy ones, too."

Met up with a mate in the rainforest behind Brisbane after Xmas, him shooting with a 1dX & 800l & me with a 7d & 300 2.8... had a string of comments but the best was "bet you can see all the way to New Zealand!"

Hmmm, not so much. The trees, mountain & curvature of the Earth...

I never let people borrow my gear. I doubt they'll treat it as nice as I do.

5D3 and 24-70 2.8L, not a big lens but someone said,
"wow, nice lens, bet you can see tomorrow with this!"

I just received a 14mm 2.8 a few weeks ago and brought my 60D in to work with me. Having never owned something that wide, I thought I would walk around downtown on my lunch break and snap a few.

I had it sitting on my desk when in walks boss-man

boss: Is that your camera?
me: Yes
boss: It looks... exotic..
me: ?? ok..

Maybe it's coz of the bulging front element...

Maybe the world can still look beautiful tomorrow...
