Currently using a Sigma 150-500 on my 7D. Shoot primarily bird photo's. Looking at 2 options

Sell sigma and get 100-400l

Keep sigma and get 400 5.6L

Read numerous reviews on both Canons. A bit torn on which way to go. Like having zoom in particular when shooting smaller birds like warblers where I can get relatively close. 400 would be a great lens for shooting shorebirds and understand its excellent for bif shots

Either option would be fine.

I have both the Sigma 150-500 and the 400/5.6, and shoot mainly birds with a 7d. Since getting the 400 I never use the Sigma.

I had a Sigma 150-500 for a couple of years, then switched to the Sigma 120-300 f2.8 which I use with TC's nice bit of kit but a bit heavy.

if you're just shooting birds at smaller apertures it may not be worth it to switch lens. But if you're shooting sports and other things the 100-400 could be worth getting. And if you are shooting birds exclusively the 400mm 5.6 prime might be the best "budget bird lens"

Let me offer another suggestion. The path I tool myself. I had the 150-500 on my 7D. I was happy with the images. I found I did not carry it alot. It was a beast of a lens. I picked up a 300 f4L IS. It takes a 1.4 TC really well, which gives you a 400(ish) 5.6 IS lens. In either incarnation it is much smaller and lighter than the 150-500. Heck, it is lighter than my 70-200 2.8. ti is really nice to have the IS there too.

Quite happy here, and a bit more flexibility.

I prefer the 100-400L for its versatility, but I shoot more than just birds. My wildlife shooting has included everything from birds to bison.

Optically and AF wise 400mm f5.6, period. Flexibility then zooms but then you already have 150-500mm.
