Why 40mm pancake lens design now?

Just added the 40mm pancake lens to my 6D + 24-105mm order, and it made me start wonder about this pancake design; why did Canon decide (or manage) to make a pancake lens now and not before, if it's so cheap to make yet quite good? Modern materials, computer aided design, or what...?

The wikipedia entry on pancake lenses is rather thin. Anyone know what focal lengths can be covered by pancake designs? 50mm?

The lens is made in Malaysia. Maybe the timing had more to do with Canon's likely ongoing effort to outsource more of their stuff from Japan to other lower-cost countries.

Nikon is doing that with several new lenses too.

Actually Canon made the FLP 38mm pancake for the Canon Pellix QL back in 1965.

It has a different optical design but is very close in size and weight to todays 40mm 2.8
