What will be a better option for night club photography and all around photography, I would like to shoot with models and weddings ect ect. a 50mm 1.4 upgrade from my 1.8 or a decent wide angle ? These photos make me jealous!! also for the flash, will my yn560-ii do, it's manual and I am learning how to use it and help add to my photos(which it certainly does!), I have heard that flashes with ETTL make life a bit easier in the club though.

also how did you guys start getting these gigs? Who do you talk to, what were your requests, what kind of gear were you using? Any pictures from back in the day when you started? Any help is greatly appreciated!

A wide zoom is a big help. 17-40mm f4 would be fine. It is a space issue, sometimes you are only 1m away from a group of 3-6 people meaning you need a very wide lens. Then sometimes you may want headshots/upper body, where the narrower end comes in to play.

ETTL is very useful as you then need not worry about having to change settings constantly. You will have say 30 different types of shot in 20 minutes. People are also a little impatient (as you would expect). I personally take 2-3 shots of each group/person. I am sure Yonguno do a flash for around £50 with E-TTL. I shot with a nifty fifty (50mm f1.8) one evening...was fun until it got busy and swapped out for the 17-40 again.

Just drop a card in with local clubs with a link to your work. Dont shoot for free either as I have been told some places will then just keep expecting you to do it for free then on. If you go in and ask for amount about 50% over what you think is fair or the going rate in the area then either youll get the extra 50% or youll be haggled down to the local rate. Big clubs just want reliability and a quick turn over I guess, an extra 30% on a photogs wage is nothing on their Saturday night taking - so ask for it.

I'd agree, get a 17-50mm but got for a f2.8 if ya can afford it. That's what I use and it's great. A 50mm is nowhere near wide enough if the club is busy. Plus you can use it for the weddings and other stuff.

I reckon ull need ETTL as well, like Johnny said, people don't wanna wait around for you to set it up, and the lighting changes so quickly. On a busy night you'll have people grabbing ya every 2 seconds looking for a photo and it saves so much time.

I started shooting clubs coz my housemate managed one, so I got my first job pretty easily Got some experience then facebooked every club around me asking if they needed someone. Got a few responses and chose the best one.
If you have any friends that work in clubs/bars see if they can help u out. Some places want to see what you like before they hire you, so if you have a selection of photos to show them it might be useful.

Ah yeah if your on a crop sensor (50D I think your sig says?) id get something around the 12-24 mark like the 12-24 f4 from tokina.
You could use the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 but still I found 17mm on a crop a bit narrow at times although it was a great lens!

Busy club on a crop sensor...youd want something more near the 12-24mm f4 mark. A club with a bit of room to move...the 17-50mm f2.8 is a dream.

It is well worth it though, I have already met tons of great people through the hobby and am looking forward to many more.

Photography is my anti drug, my anti anxiety, my meditation, a passion, and a great form of expression. I certainly love it and love that there are forums out there like this to help teach the noobies like myself

Well dont go splashing out on Canon stuff quite yet for nightlife:

http://www.ebay.com …ashes&hash=item27c97f1585 (external link)

http://www.ebay.com …ashes&hash=item2c649058cf (external link)

There are two options. They may not have canon build quality but the second is a mere $66 for an ETTL flash with enough pop for your nightlife photog needs.

I had a Metz Mecablitz 58 AF-1 digital (and borowed 430's and 580's a few times) and now use the Yongnuo YN568EX and coudn't be happier with the way cheeper Yongnuo. So big thumbs up for Yongnuo.

About lenses: wider isn't always better. Easyer yes, better no. We have a packed house almost evrey night now and I shoot with a 30mm on 1.3 crop (~24mm on 1.6 crop). Yes sometimes you have to make some room for yourself wih bigger groups, but people (girls especialy) like themselves not distorted

A 17-XX lense on crop is probably bang on. If you plan to stay with a crop body go for the 17-55 2.8 (or if money is tight a good copy sigma 17-50 2.8), if you plan on going FF the 17-40.
