Guys, I just picked up this used lens tonight and it's in terrific shape, came with the case, both caps, the hood and the tripod collar. Just shooting a few shots around my house I already love it!
Can't wait to get outside with it and go nuts!
Thanks for all the help and I look forward to posting some samples with the new toy.

Gorgeous!!/\ /\ /\ /\ /\

Here are a couple of shots I took this a.m. I only had literally 2 minutes of extra time and I grabbed the camera, stepped onto the deck and shot the first 2 things that came to mind.
These are both SOOC, untouched.
I shot video with the lens this a.m. at my son's jazz band competition and the lens was superb ~ the videographer wasn't so superb!

Sledding action photos were a good way to get to know my new lens. Not quite as quick to lock on AF as my 70-300L but real close.

Nice shots! With respect to AF speed, remember that f/2.8 has a narrower DoF

Yes, I do realize that plus the fact that I should have switched the focus range to 3m-infinity I think to help it shorten the range. Not used to that switch yet.
Here's a hand held shot from the Valentine's Day flowers I sent my wife, I was bored last night.

The 1.5 / 3M switch does nothing to the final image - really. What it does is when switched to 3.0M, it doesn't try to focus on anything closer than 3.0M, so if it is an action shot more than 3M away it doesn't waste time doing the whole focus range...

I had a few times it felt like it went through the entire focus range before it locked on. I just assumed that limiting that range may help with snappy-ness. I haven't used it for any action shots since that thought occurred to me , so I still have the opportunity to prove myself wrong! ;-)a

I haven't had mine hunt through the entire range other than very low light. Even on my T2i. I wonder if something is amiss. I use the 1.5/3m switch to help me shoot through soccer goals.

Uh Oh!
How do I test for said problems?
Any help would be appreciated.

Are any of the photos above taken when it was hunting? Does this happen with the 1D3 as well as the 7D? Does it happen with other lenses on either body?

Well, not having either of those camera bodies I cannot comment. My 60d doesn't do that however with any other lens that I can remember.
I also don't really know if it was happening on any of the shots above. I took hundreds during the sledding outing.

Sorry, I realized I posted my reply to you in the wrong thread, looking at someone else's sig :o

I would take some action shots in good light with high contrast subjects. It's possible that the snow was in the active focus point with no contrast. I could imagine my T2i doing that on the center point in snow, and I've seen it when trying to shoot birds against a blue sky.

You may be in good shape.
