I have waited and waited for the price to get reasonable on these bodies and right now I needed a full frame wildlife camera. 1Dx is way overpriced. Swallowed my pride and picked one up at the weekend.

After seeing this pic, I'm glad you did. :)

Nice job! I know it's only been a weekend, but what are your initial thoughts so far?

OK. It is not a 1D, build is less sturdy, shutter sounds more clacky, kind of cheape (silly but true). AF although brilliant feels slightly less snappy (I am quite sure Canon could release a battery grip to take an LP-e4 to improve speed and and AF, but they won't). 6fps is not really quite enough but not so slow you cant use it for the above type of shot, but you miss those extra 4 inbetweens. Buffer is a bit small IMO, buy a decent UDMA card and do not use the SD slot.

IQ wise I did alot of reading and decided the 1Dx is not actually much better, certainly until 3200 ISO. The above was ISO400 and that was as clean as anything I have from 1DmkIV, maybe a touch better (yes I admit it).

Overall a big improvement on the mkII, much nicer to use than the 7D but not quite 1D league (but half the price!).

For the above shot I used single point expanded with 4 points. Worked a charm.
