Hey guys! Haven't been on or posted in awhile. Any plans on having a local meet in the PDX area when it warms up?

Took the wife up the Space Needle for her second 26th (ha!) birthday. She's lived here all her life but had never been up. We took our two very best friends out to dinner at the SkyCity restaurant up there.

Great evening, even better company. There is a really cool place called the Bathtub Gin in Belltown that has a very "speakeasy" feel to it. No crazy signs, no anything. Just a door in an alleyway.

Looking for some tips on locations for a trip my family is planning. We have decided to get out of Portland this 4th of July.

We are headed to Bend on the 3rd and will be camping there till the 5th. (Bend has lots of stuff going on on the 4th ... perfect for the wife and kiddo). On the 5th we will head over to the area around The Painted Hills for 2 days. Coming home on Sunday with a stop off in Maupin for White Water Rafting.

I realize Sunday morning will be an early one coming from The Painted Hills area to make it to Maupin in time for rafting but thats ok :) We love camping so thats nothing new either. Just looking for some must hits (dont want to overlook anything). We do not make it to Eastern Oregon enough so I am still figuring out all thats over there.

The painted hills I hear are best in the afternoon evening so I will get Friday and Saturday to take advantage of the afternoon light.

 So true about never looking like it will warm up. Got a bit of sun today but it was raining while peeking. I usually don't mind the cold but since I am not snowboarding this season I want it to warm up a bit :(

I dont mind the cold, I jsut get tired of the rain (I know its what keeps it all green). Born and raised in PDX I am used to it, but I still get tired or the rain. Cold/hot/snow good, rain just sucks. Fingers crossed for a decent weather weekend.

Yes, painted hills are best in the evening as the sun is behind you and illuminating the hills.

You mentioned camping, but if you want to stay in a motel, let me recommend the River Bend motel in Spray, OR. It is about 45 min or so from the painted hills and it has great rooms for about oh, 70 or 80 bucks a night if I remember right.

Also, don't miss the John Day fossil beds NM.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Thank you, we are calling the campground today (first day they open up for the year to take reservations). We enjoy camping and it helps keep the cost way down. (3) nights at $15 a night compared to $80-$100 a night :)

We do have a room at the Imperial River Company in Maupin on the last night of our trip :) Nothing like a little white water rafting to finish off a trip.
