Birding around Melb. There is a wetlands area with bird hides north of Edithvale station. Too long a walk to lug your 500mm lens.

There is also a wetlands area and bird platform near Pt Cook airfield.

Maybe check out a bird spotters club, there is 2 shops in melb that sell books maps etc. One in Harthorn and one in Vermont.

You can get an induction (and go as far as getting keys to the locks) for the wetlands alongside the Werribee water treatment plant.

I like making photos and sometimes I think I'm getting better... then I realise it doesn't matter. I like making photos!

thanks HP

field trip could be the goods, I'm notorious for my unreliability though - shift worker combined with being a single dad sort of takes up a bit of time... I do most of my shooting on my weekdays off, other than family shots etc

As we're going to overseas just another 4 weeks, so we don't have any plane for short trip till next year.

Lucky you :)

Anyway the Grampians is high on our list for weekend away sometime next year.

Stayed there earlier this year. We stayed at Lake Fyans Caravan Park (external link) in the campertrailer.

Top spot, backs onto the lake, and the serves of food at the eatery are massive.

And 20mins tops to the base of the Grampians.

I wanna find somewhere with some good old cars, barns, and buildings...

Definitely!
I'm in hawaii at the moment and holidays are boring without photographers!

also, lesson learnt - 200mm is too short for bird photography

Its strange, I've felt that 200mm has been ok in Melbourne but my experience in hawaii has been that even 300mm is short, maybe its just that their birds are skittish, 400-500mm minimum I reckon - just to get decent shots
