I could care less about IS for photos at this FL and I know I won't miss the extra range (scanning the exif of all my top shots from the 24-105, very few were 70+).

My concern is video. I do use video from time to time for personal use with my children. The 24-105 is a great video lens and I do worry about the loss if IS there. Can anyone provide input about the 24-70II in terms of 'on the go' video?

I am ready to pull the trigger, but this is my one hesitation.

I'd say the Tarmon is better suited if video is a must. Try using your 24-105 with IS turned off to see how it looks.
Personally i find i can do it but find even the slightest movement bugs me, so i tend to use my Powershot for video on the go.

I have a video business and find that I can hand hold up to 50mm on a FF sensor with great results. Anything above 50mm handheld I am never happy with. I have used this lens on a steadycam at 24mm and LOVE the results.

Yep, this is my hesitation. I have tested a bit with the 24-105 with IS off, and can definitely notice the difference in video. I really do want the 24-70 II (already in my cart), but can't afford to keep the 24-105 just for video. Maybe I can pick up a cheaper video only lens. Hmmm....

I still say the Tamron is your best bet. IQ is very, very close to the Canon. The biggest downside is the slightly slower AF, but its only slightly slower so might not be an issue.

Just another 100% image sample for another look at corner to corner sharpity goodness at 24mm f/8 on a 22MP FF (in a scene with no super close foreground, something that would stress lower corners a lot more):

Hi guys i just have a question. I noticed on my copy of the lens some kind of softness on the bottom right corner. This happens at 24mm and 35mm at F2.8, F4 and even at F8 The left corners are much better. Did anybodyelse notice that ?http://imageshack.us …mages/854/35mm28copy.jpg/ (external link)

It is hard to get a copy that does it all perfectly. Some are pretty sharp center frame at f2.8 but some are insanely sharp at f/2.8 center frame. And it's hard to get on with the DOF placement for all corners and edges the same, many copies seem to be a bit tilted this way or that. The one I found that has beyond crazy good f/2.8 center frame performance does get a bit weak on the bottom left corner seeming to push DOF a bit farther back there (and a touch closer in on upper right). The one I found that was totally even for DOF at all edges and corners was definitely softest at f/2.8 of all the copies heh (still not bad, at least as good as any other 24-70 2.8 but not better and not uber like some copies). One guy said he did go through more than me, he went through 7 copies and said he got one that does every aspect perfectly.

Even the worst of them still does most things better than a 24-105L though to keep it in perspective hah.
OTOH for the price you'd expect a bit more perfect QC.

Just received my Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM and it has a lot of distortion and vignetting. I've looked at all of the photos in this long post and I have not seen any that look like what I'm seeing. Are you guys correcting these problems in post? I was shocked when I looked at the first couple of test shots. I'm not feeling to good about this lens at the moment.
