Post your Wide Open + Neutral Density + Strobe(s) photos

Interesting point about focus. I'm learning this technique too, and at f1.8 or f1.4 the DOF is so shallow that you have to be extra aware of the focus point. I'm including two photos from a family portrait session. The single girl...her close eye is in focus, and the away one is starting to get blurry. In the other one, the center girl is in focus, the one on camera-right is not bad, the one on camera-left is blurry, as she's closer. Just things I need to be more aware of with that razor-thin DOF.
Side-note...the 50mm 1.4 and 85 1.8 all focused fine on my 5d2, with the tifffen 2-8 stop filter, on max.

^ Yep, slightly missed focus on that one.. haha its hard to focus as is with 85L.. gets even harder when you have a ND+CPL stacked on top

So, Manav - if you have a ST-EX-RT in the hot shoe, and put a 600EX-RT on manual at 1/128, can you use it to optically trigger the Einstein w/o needing any of the PCB triggers (Cybersync)? Like, maybe just put it down low for fill flash, but the real purpose would be as an optical trigger?

Any one else?

The effectiveness of optical triggers is limited outside. Just bite the bullet and buy a set of triggers. You can get the YN RF 603 or older 602's reasonably priced.

^ I haven't tried using optical outdoors but I'm guessing that during a bright sunny day it might not work properly.. I always use Cybersync system outdoors and it never misses a beat.

I love the floating effect. Didnt beleive that 1/200 could freeze the motion and it looks like the flash could have done the freezing but i dont know? Nice image!

As long as you are two stops brighter than the ambient the flash duration becomes the motion stopping factor.

Amazing work in this thread! I am already thinking about buying the Singh-Ray Vari ND for other reasons... Lightning season is coming soon here to Florida, and I want to be able to shoot lightning in the daytime with longer exposures. ... But this gives me another reason to pull the trigger on the purchase, even though I don't have a strobe at this point. Just my 580EX II.
